TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil women's basketball team was unable to overcome an Arizona team that connected on 57 percent of its shots, including 65 percent of its attempts from long range, in the Wildcats' 91-52 win on Sunday.
Jalyn Brown led ASU in both scoring (19 points) and rebounds (eight). Trayanna Crisp scored 12 points while Jaddan Simmons added 11 points for the Sun Devils (7-4, 0-1 Pac-12), who shot 31 percent and were only able to knock down three of their 14 attempts from beyond the arc.
"Obviously not the outcome that we wanted," ASU head coach Natasha Adair said. "I just talked with our group about consistency of effort. All week, we talked about this [Territorial Cup Series] game and the history of the game and we went back to 1899 and what it meant, and there are things we have to continue to work on. There are things we have to continue to improve on, and we have another opportunity to get them at their place.
"We have another game on Wednesday (vs. Fresno State). We're going to get back in the lab and keep working. I thought having [Isadora Sousa] out on the floor tonight was a bright spot for us. This was her first game back. Again, [Jalyn Brown] shows what she can do and in every game she continues to get better. I thought it was a great showing for [Trayanna Crisp] and Jaddan [Simmons]. And so those are always good pieces. Even down the stretch, I thought we did some things. We just have to do it consistently for 40 plus minutes."
ASU led by as many as three early after Crisp's jumper gave it a 5-2 lead 2:35 into the game.
With ASU up 10-8, the Wildcats (8-3, 1-0) made the first significant run of the game, scoring nine consecutive points to claim a 17-10 lead.
It appeared the Sun Devils would go to the second quarter down by five, but a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Arizona's Courtney Blakely enabled the Wildcats to take a 24-16 lead after 10 minutes.
Crisp scored ASU's first points of the second quarter with a jumper that cut Arizona's first double-digit lead of the game to eight, 26-18.
It was at that point where the two teams went in opposite directions in terms of their ability to score the basketball. The next time ASU scored – a pair of free throws by Brown with 3:14 remaining in the half – it found itself down 46-20. The Wildcats scored six of the last 10 points of the quarter to take a 52-24 lead at the half.
Brown scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the second half on 6-of-10 shooting. She also grabbed six of her eight rebounds over the final 20 minutes, including four offensive boards.
The Sun Devils return to action on Wednesday (12 p.m. MST) when they take on Fresno State as part of the Jerry Colangelo Hall of Fame Series at Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix.
