TEMPE – Sun Devil Football dropped its season finale against No. 15 Arizona, 59-23, in the annual Territorial Cup contest Saturday afternoon at Mountain American Stadium.
ASU struggled to stop Arizona's dynamic offense as the Wildcats scored on six straight drives to open the game.
The Sun Devils rushed for 224 yards on the ground, led by Cam Skattebo with 108 yards, and Jalin Conyers with 43 yards. Both players found the end zone: Skattebo a four-yard run in the first quarter and Conyers a one-yard score in the third quarter. Jaden Rashada also made his return at quarterback in a reserve role and threw for 82 yards and one score.
Shamari Simmons led ASU with eight tackles on the day along with Tre Brown adding seven tackles, a tackle for loss and his first interception of the year.
After a field goal gave Arizona the early lead, Jalin Conyers – starting under center for the second time in 2023 – navigated a seven-play, 75-yard drive that was capped off with Skattebo's ninth touchdown on the ground this season. The first opening drive touchdown allowed by Arizona in four games, propelled ASU into the lead, 7-3.
Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita's 357 passing yards in the first half were the catalyst for Arizona's 35 unanswered points that allowed them to take a 38-7 lead at halftime.
The Sun Devils did not fold as they rallied to score 16 points in the second half despite the game's outcome having been decided.
ASU scored in the third quarter on Conyers' one-yard run, his first career touchdown coming on the ground. Conyers was also successful, once again using his legs, on ASU's subsequent two-point conversion attempt.
Rashada found Troy Omeire for a 31-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter, his third receiving touchdown on the year.
On three occasions, the Sun Devils marched into Arizona territory and came away without any points. The Wildcats also scored two touchdowns off Sun Devil turnovers and scored two others in the second half after ASU turned the ball over on downs.
