TEMPE – No. 24 Sun Devil Soccer (9-2-4) returns home this weekend to host No. 11 USC (9-2-1) and No. 2 UCLA (12-1) for their final home matches of the regular season. The match versus USC will be on Thursday, October 19 at 7 p.m. MST, and ASU will face Los Angeles on Sunday, October 22 at 1 p.m. MST. In the Maroon and Gold's last match, the team earned a 2-0 win over Oregon in a late scoring scene on the road with goals from Enasia Colon and Hannah Lapeire. The game was scoreless until the 82nd minute when Keri Matthews passed to Colon, who took a shot from just outside the box to notch her ninth goal of the season. Just minutes later, Lapeire recorded the Sun Devil's second goal, and the first of her ASU career, in the 85th minute by finishing a corner kick taken by Matthews. Pauline Nelles also tied the school's single-season shutout record with her eighth of the season.
USC is coming off their first draw of the season, where they hosted Colorado at home for a 1-1 matchup. The Trojans got on the board in just the third minute of the match, with Kayla Colbert recording her sixth goal of the year, but nearly seven minutes later, the Trojans conceded a penalty kick, and Colorado equalized in the 10th minute. Neither team was able to record an additional goal despite the Buffaloe's nine shots and the Trojan's 19 shots.
UCLA has won every match in conference play thus far and defeated Utah 4-0 in their last game. The Bruin's four goals came from four players, one of which being Reilyn Turner's team-leading eighth of the season. Defender Quincy McMahon recorded two assists against Utah and secured her fourth consecutive Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award, becoming the first to do so in Pac-12 history.
In past meetings with the two California teams, Arizona State holds an 8-19 record against the Trojans and a 2-22-2 versus the Bruins.
The Sun Devils continue to live in the Pac-12 leaderboards, with Colon sitting in second place for goals (9) and points (22). Suzuka Yosue is second with six assists, and Matthews is third with five assists. Nelles leads the conference with her .879 save percentage and eight shutouts. She is second in GAA (0.53) and fourth in saves (58).
Much of the scoring effort of the Sun Devils has come in the second half of games, with 21 of the 28 total goals coming after intermission. They have tallied 11 of those – nearly 40 percent of the season's total – in the final 15 minutes of action, including both goals last week in Eugene.
ASU moved into the rankings of both national polls this week, coming in at No. 24 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 23 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings. It's the first appearance in the coaches poll since September 20, 2021.
The Sun Devils are in the midst of one of the most successful runs in program history, with 28 wins over the past three seasons. The .613 winning percentage since 2021 is tied for the third-best for a three-year span in program history.
