SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Sun Devil triathlon successfully defended its West Region crown by winning the 2023 West Region National Qualifier on Saturday morning at Fellows Lake. Freshman Sidney Clement led the team by securing the individual title for her first collegiate victory.
Arizona State had three of the top six finishers in the race, and all five scorers placed in the top 16. In total, eight Sun Devils finished in the top 25.
"I am very proud of the team's performance today. They were resilient, strong, and very determined," ASU head coach Cliff English said after the race. "There were lots of variables thrown at them, including high winds, cold weather, light rain, mechanical issues and start delays of over 90 minutes. Those are definitely a component of our sport at times, and they handled it all with poise."
Clement completed the race in one hour, three minutes, and 39 seconds, and she was at the front of the pack the entire day after coming out of the lake in fourth with a swim of 10:11. She finished the bike in 33:06 and then finished strong with a run time of 18:30.
Heidi Jurankova finished fifth in 1:04:08. She was 20th after leaving the swim in 10:45 but worked her way through the field with a time of 33:00 minutes on the bike. Jurankova had the fifth-best run at 18:29 to work her way towards the top of the field.
Faith Dasso placed sixth by finishing in 1:04:24. She was 13th leaving the lake before completing the bike ride in 32:42 – fourth-fastest of anyone in the field – and then closing with a run of 19:15.
English added, "It was a big breakthrough individual performance with Sidney Clement getting her first collegiate win. We also had notable performances from sophomores Faith Dasso and Heidi Jurankova, finishing in the fifth and sixth spots.
Using a time of 1:05:04, Zoe Mari Adam placed 11th, with Evan Welch in 16th with her time of 1:05:52. Camille Buchanan finished 17th with Naomi Ruff in 19th, Britney Brown in 23rd, Madison Judas in 31st, and Katy Clausen in 38th.
San Francisco finished second, with TCU in third and Arizona in fourth.
ASU now looks ahead to the Collegiate Triathlon National Championship, where the Sun Devils are the six-time defending champions. They will go for a seventh title on November 11 at Tempe Town Lake.
