TEMPE – No. 19 Sun Devil Volleyball is heading to Oregon this week for the first of two-straight weekends away from home, taking on Oregon State on Friday, October 13, before heading to No. 5 Oregon on Sunday, October 15.

How to Follow
Friday's match in Corvallis against the Beavers will be at 7 p.m. MST/PDT and will be on the OSU Live Stream. The top-20 matchup in Eugene between the Ducks and Sun Devils is at noon MST/PDT and will be on the Pac-12 Network. Sun Devil Outlook
No. 19 Arizona State (17-1, 5-1 Pac-12)
  • The Sun Devils are ranked No. 19 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, the highest ASU has been since 2015. JJ Van Niel is just the second first-year head coach at ASU to have a ranked team, the other being Debbie Brown in 1983. Her team was ranked for 11 weeks and got as high as No. 13.
  • Last weekend, Arizona State beat USC and UCLA in Tempe. This was the first weekend sweep of the LA schools since 2010 and only the third time it has happened in program history.
  • The win over UCLA was the 11th sweep of the season and the first sweep over the Bruins since 2009. The team is already tied for the fifth-highest number of sweeps in a season in program history, the most being 15. 
  • Graduate setter Shannon Shields eclipsed 2,000 career assists over the weekend, now at 2,010. In the win over USC, she notched 40 or more assists for the seventh time this season and 10th in her career. In the NCAA, she is ranked in the top 40 for total assists and for assists per set.
  • Senior opposite Marta Levinska has had a fantastic senior year so far. She leads the team in kills and is ranked in the top 25 in the nation for total kills (262), kills per set (4.23), total points (310.5) and points per set (5.01). She is now 18 kills away from 11th place in the record book for career kills, 34 kills from cracking the top 10. Earlier this season, she was the back-to-back Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, the first time that has happened to a Sun Devil.
  • Arizona State is 17-1 on the year. already past the 2022 win total of 13. The current win total of 17 is tied for the sixth-most wins this century for the Sun Devils. The 14-0 start to the season was the third-best start to a season in program history. 
Opponent Outlook
Oregon State (5-11, 0-6 Pac-12)
  • The Beavers have struggled in conference play so far. Last weekend, they were on the road at Utah and Colorado, dropping both. Oregon State also has a first-year head coach in Lindsey Behonick.
  • In 2022, OSU went 7-23 (2-18 Pac-12). The two conference wins came against Colorado and Cal.
  • Last season, ASU got the season sweep over Oregon State. In the last six meetings between the two teams, neither team has won in straight sets and four have gone to five sets.
No. 5 Oregon (15-2, 5-1 Pac-12)
  • The Ducks are having a strong 2023 season, most recently winning at Colorado and Utah. The team has three wins over top-15 teams. The two losses have come from ranked opponents, both in the top 10.
  • Oregon is coming off of a 26-6 2022 season. The team won three matches in the NCAA Tournament, ultimately losing in the Elite Eight to No. 4 Louisville in five sets.
  • Arizona State has lost four in a row to Oregon. ASU's last win against Oregon came in 2021, and the last road win was in 2019.
  • ASU freshman outside hitter and recent serving specialist Jillian Neal's older sister Colby Neal is a middle blocker on Oregon's team.
