Round-Up from the Sun Devils Fall Season

TEMPE, Ariz.- The Sun Devil Women's Tennis program announced its fall schedule in September, releasing a slate that currently features 11 tournaments and concludes with the annual Thunderbird Invitational in November.

The fall season will officially commence on Monday, September 18, as six Sun Devils will scatter across the country to play in two tournaments.

Sophomore Chelsea Fontenel will play in the ITF Berkeley $60,000 as the lone Sun Devil competing in California, witch competition held from September 18-24.

ITF BERKELEY $60,000 UPDATES

• Fontenel was defeated in the first round of the qualifying draw to Maria Kozyreva (6-1, 6-1).

In Cary, North Carolina, Emilija Tverijonaite, Giulia Morlet, Marianna Argyrokastriti, Rachel Hanford and Patricija Spaka will partake in the College Ranked Spotlight, hosted by N.C. State from September 21-24.

ITA ALL-AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATES

• Saturday, September 30: Morlet and Argyrokastriti both competed in singles to start things off in the Round of 128. Argyrokastriti defeated Texas Tech's Avelina Sayfetdinova (6-7, 7-5, 6-3). Morlet came up short to Austin Peay State's Jana Leder in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). 
• Sunday, October 1: Argyrokastriti defeated Northwestern's Christina Hand in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) and NC State's Broadfoot in three (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) to advance to the main draw. Morlet defeated Clemson's Mayorova in straight sets in the consolation bracket (6-1, 6-1). 
• Monday, October 2: Morlet and Argyrokastriti came up short to Texas Tech's Polischuk/Tiglea (8-7) in doubles Monday afternoon. In the consolation bracket, Morlet and Argyrokastriti were defeted by Wake Forest's Killingworth/Cruz (8-6).
• Tuesday, October 3: Argyrokastriti fell in three to North Carolina's Carson Tanguilig, a part of the defending national champion in doubles (6-2, 6-2, 6-4). 

Freshman Emilija Tverijonaite will be the lone Sun Devil competing in the ITF $25,000 in Redding, Calif from Oct. 2 through Oct. 8.

ITF REDDING $25,000 UPDATES

• Tverijonaite fell in the first round of the qualifying draw to Alanis Hamilton (7-6, 6-2).

Emilija Tverijonaite, Marianna Argyrokastriti, Sara Svetac, Patricija Spaka and Natasha Hill will compete at the ITA Regional Championships in San Diego beginning Thursday, October 19.

• Thursday, October 19: Singles play opened for those competing with doubles play beginning on Friday morning.
  • Tverijonaite def. UCSD's Nguyen (6-1, 6-2) and UCSD's Gamal (6-4, 6-2)
  • Argyrokastriti def. UCSD's Chen (6-0, 6-1) and SDSU's Velcea (6-3, 6-4)

• Friday, October 20: Doubles play began with Spaka/Svetac winning their opening match over UCSD's Pearson/Nguyen (8-6) as well as Tverijonaite/Argyrokastriti who were victorious over UCR's Shahbazi/Tran (8-2).

  • Spaka retired due to injury in her bonus singles match to UCSB's Kiss.
  • Svetac lost to Arizona's Ostryzygalo (6-3, 6-1) in a bonus singles match. 
  • Pepperdine's Campana def. Tverijonaite (7-6, 6-2, 6-1) in the Round of 32.
  • Hill lost to UC Riverside's Tran (6-4, 6-4) in a bonus singles match.
