SEATTLE, Wash. - The Arizona State men's basketball team fell in overtime on the road against the Washington Huskies, 69-66, Thursday night.
 
Austin Nunez hit three clutch free throws with less than a second on the clock in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Desmond Cambridge Jr.'s 26 points were the most by any Sun Devil this season.
 
Arizona State is off to a 15-6 start, tied for the second best 21-game start under head coach Bobby Hurley and marks just the fifth time since 2005-06 ASU has 15 wins in its first 21 games.

  • The win moves the Sun Devils to 6-3 in Pac-12 play. It's the third time in the last five years ASU has won six of its first 10 conference games.

  • The Huskies entered the contest fourth in the nation with six blocks per game, but only managed four despite having an overtime period.
  • Desmond Cambridge had 26 points, the most for any Sun Devil this season, his ASU high and fourth straight game with at least 15 points.
  • He scored seven of ASU's first nine on the evening.
  • Frankie Collins tossed six dimes. He entered as one of just five Pac-12 players averaging at least 4.75 assists per game.
  • The Sun Devil defense forced 22 turnovers, the second time in a conference game this season forcing 20-or-more turnovers, (20, vs. Colorado, Dec. 1, 2022.) and the 7th time since 2020-21 forcing conference opponents to 20-or-more turnovers in a game. In fact, they had five in the first 3:36.
  • The 11 first half turnovers were the most forced by the ASU defense in league play this season. Washington's 22 turnovers are their second-most in a game this season and tied for the most in a conference game.
  • Austin Nunez played the second most minutes of his career with 24. He recorded 25 on the road in Colorado, a game that Frankie Collins did not play in due to a non-COVID related illness.
  • The Sun Devils fall to 0-2 on the season in overtime. 
KEY MOMENTS
  • Arizona State forced five turnovers, forced Washington to miss its first eight shots from the floor and were held scoreless in the first 5:41. The Sun Devils opened the game on a 12-0 run.
  • ASU opened the second half on a 7-2 advantage. Washington called timeout at 14:34 with Arizona State winning the second half, 13-6 and being held to 2-9 from the field.
  • The Sun Devils went on a 16-7 scoring stretch over 9:14 from 9:58 - :44, cutting their deficit to just one.
  • Austin Nunez hit three clutch free throws with less than a second left, sending the game to overtime.

FIRST HALF
Desmond Cambridge Jr. got the Arizona State (15-6, 6-3) offense started at 18:40 on a jumper from the right side for a 2-0 ASU lead.
 
Desmond Cambridge Jr. then drained his first triple of the contest, 9-0 ASU at 15:23. He had seven of ASU's nine points.
 
DJ Horne cashed in a triple, his first of the game at 14:41 for a 12-0 Sun Devil run to open the contest.
 
The Huskies (13-9, 5-6)  got on the board at 14:19 with a jumper, ending the Sun Devil run at 12.
 
Washington countered the 12-0 Sun Devil run with a 7-0 run of their own before Luther Muhammed knocked in a jumper at 9:27, making it 14-7 Arizona State. The Huskies would get another bucket before the under-eight media timeout.
 
The Huskies closed the stanza on a 12-2 advantage to lead 32-20.
 
SECOND HALF
Frankie Collins found Desmond Cambridge Jr. for a jumper on the left baseline and cut the lead to 10, 32-22 at 19:42, the first points of the second half.
 
After UW countered with a floater of their own, Austin Nunez stole the ball away and Devan Cambridge laid it in at 18:49.
 
Collins knocked in a three and cut it to seven, 34-27 at 18:03. He then cashed in another three at 7:29, a 9-0 ASU run over 1:56 and the score was separated by a single point, 45-44.
 
The Sun Devils tied the contest at 47 on a layup by Desmond Cambridge Jr. at 4:37. It was his ASU high 23 points.
 
Trailing by three, 54-51, Austin Nunez forced a foul, hit three incredibly clutch free throws with less than a second to go and sent the contest to overtime.
 
OVERTIME
The Huskies opened overtime on a 5-0 run in the first 1:32 for a 59-54 lead with 3:28 to play.
 
After another basket, Nunez drilled ASU's first basket of the extra period, a three pointer with 3:03 left from Desmond Cambridge Jr.
 
Collins made another basket 1:14 and made the score 63-59 Huskies. The Sun Devils called timeout.
 
With :26 on the clock, Desmond Cambridge Jr. drilled a three and made it 64-62 Huskies. Following two Huskie free throws with :23 left, Collins dropped one in and maintained a two point deficit, 66-64.
 
Arizona State had a chance to tie the contest at the buzzer but came up short, falling 69-66.
