Coimbra, Portugal – Sun Devil Water Polo assistant coach Ethan D'Souza was named head coach of the 2023 World Aquatics U20 Water Polo Championships, the Canadian Water Polo Association announced earlier this year.
D'Souza will lead the Canadian squad comprised of 13 athletes starting on Sept. 8 and going through Sept. 15, taking place in Coimbra, Portugal. Alongside D'Souza, two Sun Devils are members of the Canadian squad, Kat Featherstone and Ashley Ferguson.
The Canadian team is placed in group D and will face France and Chile in the round-robin stage, with the first matchup for Team Canada taking place on Sept. 9 against Chile at 2:30 a.m. MST, followed by a match against France on Sept. 10 at 5:30 a.m.
Prior to joining Sun Devil Water Polo. Ethan spent nearly eight years with Team Canada collecting multiple podium finishes, and has been a member of the Canadian coaching staff since 2015. Earlier this Summer, he was an assistant on the Canadian women's national team at the World Aquatic Championships in July, where the team finished in seventh.
Featherstone and Ferguson both are freshmen as new members of Sun Devil Water Polo, but boast plenty of experience on the international stage representing Canada.
Featherstone was on the Canadian Youth U18 national team in 2022 where she appeared in 21 games and the Canadian Junior National Team for the U19 Pan-Am Championships in 2019. Ferguson was also named to the Junior National Team in 2022, where she scored nine goals and earned a Player of the Match honor against Serbia.
