This medal was Smith's fifth of the week after winning the silver in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the bronze in the 200m butterfly. In the relay, Smith swam the backstroke portion of the medley relay with a split of 57.68. She wins the championship alongside her Team USA teammates Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass.

Also at last year's World Championships, Smith won the 100m backstroke championship.
She also medaled in this relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo as Smith and her relay won the silver.
