AUSTIN -- Sun Devil Men's Golf senior Ryggs Johnston and Sun Devil Hockey senior Jacob Semik were one of 47 student-athletes named to the 2023 Academic All-America® Men's At-Large Teams selected by the College Sports Communicators – formerly College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) – according to an announcement on Wednesday.
Johnston was selected as a First Team member and Semik landed on the Second Team.
Semik was a two-time alternate captain for the Sun Devils, missing only two possible games in his entire NCAA career. The defenseman graduated in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Communications and tallied 134 games over four years. He hung up the maroon and gold jersey as a winner of the 'Best Teammate Award' and a former Rookie of the Year. Semik completed his final semester with a 4.20 GPA to graduate with a 3.98 overall GPA. The past two seasons, Semik earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honors and last year was awarded the Krampade All-American Scholars Award.
Johnston, already the second Sun Devil Men's Golfer in program history to earn Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has a perfect 4.00 grade-point average in business management. He graduated in May with his management degree and a certificate in sports business and will return for a fifth season in 2023-24.
On the course, Johnston played in every tournament in 2022-23 and placed in the top 15 three times. For his career, he holds a 71.40 scoring average with 19 top-20 results and 10 top-10 finishes, highlighted by a pair of top 5s at the 2021 Pac-12 (T-4th) and NCAA (3rd) Championships. He earned third-team All-America honors in 2020-21. He has posted 63 par or bettter rounds (124 total rounds) and 32 in the 60s.
