SCOTTSDALE -- Sun Devil Baseball couldn't shake an inauspicious opening frame as ASU fell to rival Arizona, 12-3, in the opening contest of the 2023 Pac-12 Basebal Tournament.
Arizona scored four runs on just two hits in the top of the first, a theme that would last through the day with ASU walking 10 Wildcat batters - including five in the fourth inning to effectively put the game away with the Sun Devils falling into a 9-0 hole.
Six of the Wildcat batters that drew walks would score and another that reach base on a hit-by-pitch.
Jacob Tobias, Isaiah Jackson and Luke Hill each had two hts and Jonny Weaver had a pinch hit two-RBI double.
The Sun Devils will have a day off before playing second-seeded Oregon State on Tuesday at 10 a.m. AZT at Scottsdale Stadium. ASU must win the game and get some help from other pods to advance to the tournament semifinal and likely will need to win the contest to bolster its chance of an at-large bid for the NCAA Postseason.
