Wichita, Kan. - Ryan Campos has added yet another honor to his ever-growing trophy case after being named a Semifinal for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, according to an announcement by the organization Monday.
Campos is one of only two underclassmen on the 13-player semifinal list. Previous winners of the award include Adley Rutschman (2019, Oregon State/Baltimore Orioles), Mike Zunino (2012, Florida/Seattle Mariners), Buster Posey (2009, Florida State/San Francisco Giants) and Kurt Suzuki (2004, Cal State Fullerton/Oakland Athletics)
Campos, a Pac-12 All-Conference honoree, has been ASU's most reliable presence in the Willie Bloomquist era. He has reached base in a ridiculous 76-of-84 (90.4%) career games with the Sun Devils overall and all but two games this season. The two games he did not reach base were the season opener and the first game after he returned from an 11-game injury absence.
Overall, Campos has smacked .395 with 16 extra-base hits including eight home runs in 42 games this season. He walked 33 times and struck out on a mere 16 occurrences. His 33 free passes are 12th in the league, yet because of his injury, he has the fewest games played of anyone in the top 50 in the category.
His .395 average is fourth in the Conference of Champions and his .508 OBP is second by .01 points in the league.
Additionally, his .375 career-batting average is 23rd among active players in Division I and he is the highest ranked catcher on the list.
Campos was named the Jim Brock Mr. Sun Devil at the squad's end-of-season awards banquet at the end of the regular season. Named for the legendary and late Dr. Jim Brock, the award is presented to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the attitude and character expected of a Sun Devil Baseball Player.
Catchers on the watch list were nominated by their schools. Statistics to compare them were pulled on May 11, 2023. One key criterion in determining the semifinalists is that they must be the starting catcher for their team in 70% of the games. This year there were several offensively strong nominees that did not meet the criteria to move forward in the selection process.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6, 2023. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced on June 29, 2023.
