The second round of the Las Vegas Regional saw all five Sun Devils shoot in red figures, combining for a round 12-under 276 (68-68-70-70=276/-12). Arizona State is currently at 38-under par (262-276=538) only four strokes behind conference rival Stanford going into the final round at Bear's Best Las Vegas. The top five teams in the Las Vegas Regional will qualify for Grayhawk Golf Club, host of the NCAA Championship for the Women's and Men's national championships for the third straight year.
"The guys aren't happy with the day. We want the best score every day and today we got beat by a lot," said Head Coach Matt Thurmond. "In a couple of hours, we will start to think about tomorrow and we will come out aggressive and play to win."
Preston Summerhays' continues to lead the way for the Sun Devils with a two-under 70 to put him at 12-under for the tournament, which places him in fifth heading into Wednesday's final round, only two strokes behind the leader. He managed to birdie three of his last seven holes to shoot two-under on the back nine.
Senior Ryggs Johnston jumped nine spots up the leaderboard tying the team-low with a four-under 68 to be tied for 24th at six-under for the tournament. Johnston's round included five birdies and an eagle, shooting a 31 in his first nine holes, tied for second best on the day against the field.
"Ryggs is playing really well even though he didn't finish the way he wanted, but still a great sign on how his game has been progressing," said Associate Head Coach Thomas Suton. "Look for a low one Wednesday."
Freshman Luke Potter remained consistent throughout his second round, keeping the scorecard clean with 14 pars, but included the team's one of two eagles on the day on hole 12, to secure a one-under round of 71, sitting at four-under for the tournament.
The Sun Devils continue to take advantage of the par 5's with a 4.20 scoring average sitting at 32-under through two days, which is tied for the best with Northwestern going into the final round. Following a rain delay toward the end of the Sun Devil's round, the team kept pace with the Cardinal, with both teams going two under in their remaining holes to keep the gap at four strokes going into Wednesday.
Arizona State will be a part of the final group which will tee off at 7:30 a.m. MST and will hunt for its ninth regional title and will look to return to Grayhawk Golf Club for the third consecutive season to compete for a national title. The Sun Devils will be paired with Stanford and Virginia for the second straight day. Live stats can be found golfstat.com and live updates provided on Instagram and Twitter, @sundevilmgolf.
