EUGENE – No. 17/12 Sun Devil Baseball was undone by a seven-run fourth inning by No 23/20 Oregon, dropping the series opener 11-5 on Friday at PK Park in Eugene.
Nick McLain was 2-for-3 with a walk and homered from both sides on the plate in one of the few offensive standout performances on the day. The hit extended his streak to open his collegiate career to 10-straight games, something no Sun Devil freshman has done since at least before the 1998 season.
Jacob Tobias added his eighth home run of the season and Nu'u Contrades had a pair of hits as well.
The Sun Devils simply could not shake a disastrous fourth inning where the team was one strike away from getting out of things relatively unharmed. Trailing 3-1, a full-count walk loaded the bases and a two-RBI double was followed by another base-loading walk and that preceded the gut punch grand slam that effectively put the game away, making it 9-1 instead of 3-1.
ASU tacked on four more runs over the course of the game but could not find any late inning theatrics.
The Sun Devils will look to even the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. AZT in Eugene.
