TEMPE -- WARNING: There's blood in the water. Junior forward Dylan Jackson took a bite out of the Sharks, scoring his first NCAA career hat trick, and the first-ever at Mullett Arena, on Friday night to lead the Arizona State ice hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Long Island. Eight Sun Devils hunted the Sharks (13-21-1) on the score sheet while Ben Kraws protected home territory between the pipes for the Sun Devils (17-21-0).
Six Sun Devils executed a multipoint night, paving the way for ASU's breezy win. Dylan Jackson (3G), Jacob Semik (2A), Chris Grando (2A), Robert Mastrosimone (1G, 1A), Ty Jackson (3A), and Josh Doan (1G, 1A) combined for 12 points in the series opener. It's the second time that ASU has scored six goals in a game this season.
Mastrosimone scored the fourth goal of the game and eventual game-winner. This goal came at the 15 minute mark of the third period with assists from Josh Doan and Ty Jackson. With tonight's lamp lighting, he extends his team lead in game-winning goals. He's scored two in overtime (vs. No. 6 North Dakota and No. 2 Minnesota) and in the third period (vs. St. Thomas and Long Island).
Josh Doan extended his point-scoring streak to eight games with a goal and assist. His streak includes eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in eight games.
Ben Kraws made his third start and fifth appearance in net this season. The senior finished the night with 17 saves and pushed his season record to 2-0-0. Tomorrow, Kraws is one of seven seniors honored on Senior Night. Over the course of his ASU career he boasts a 2.92 goals against average with a .907 save percentage and 14-11-1 record.
ASU outshot LIU, 26-20, but landed in the penalty box more frequently than the Sharks. The Sun Devils racked up 29 penalty minutes and nine penalties while LIU tallied seven penalties for 14 minutes in the box.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Period
The Sharks struck quickly to land on the board first, just three minutes into the opening period.
Dylan Jackson didn't let the LIU lead hold for long as he scored the equalizer seven minutes later with an assist from Jacob Semik.
Once hot, you can't stop Dylan Jackson. The junior forward boasts four multipoint games this season. Dylan tallied his second goal of the game 16 minutes into the first frame to give the Sun Devils their first lead of the night. This marks his second multi-goal night of the season after scoring two against Lindenwood on Feb. 17. Chris Grando notched his fifth assist of the season.
Second Period
LIU answered ASU's momentum with a goal of its own five minutes into the period.
The Sun Devil penalty kill unit was put to the test at the seven-minute mark and forced to kill a five minute major and game misconduct called on Brendan Studioso for contact to the head. The fourth-ranked penalty kill squad continued to show their dominance by killing the major.
It's all bad blood between these two programs after last year's highly physical matchup. The physicality of both teams became apparent once again halfway through the second period. Extracurriculars and subsequent penalties for both teams were seemingly endless from this point onward. Between both teams there were 43 penalty minutes in the 60 minute game.
With 1:46 left in the period, the Sharks scored a shorthanded goal, putting them up 3-2.
Third Period
Just two minutes into the final period, Teddy Lagerback made his mark and equalized the game at three-all. Semik notched his second assist of the night along with Benji Eckerle gaining his first.
Robert Mastrosimone put the Sun Devils up by one with only five minutes left in the game. His power play goal marks his 10th goal of the year. Mastrosimone has now contributed four game winning goals throughout the season.
Captain Josh Doan scored the team's second power play goal of the night, just two minutes after Mastrosimone's PPG. This goal gives Doan his seventh multipoint game of the season and extends his point streak to eight games.
The unstoppable Dylan Jackson scored an empty netter to complete the win with 20 seconds left in the game. This marks the first collegiate hat trick for Jackson, and is the first hat trick in Mullett Arena.

Arizona State Head Coach Greg Powers:
On the third period: "The third period was good. I think the first two were the worst I've ever seen this program play. We looked like a team that's had anywhere from seven abled to 10 abled forwards for the last month and a half and that's what we looked like. Looked tired. No legs. No energy. No jump. But, they snapped out of it. It's hard to snap out of a funk when you're that bad, and we were that bad. I'm proud of the guys for doing it. Proud of the power play for stepping up and winning us a game when they needed to, and they found a way to get a win."
On Dylan Jackson: "He's at 11 goals now. He could easily have 20. He's a good hockey player. Still young. He's going to be really good for us."
On Ben Kraws: "Ben was good. He did what he had to do. They (LIU) didn't have much. He hung in there and made a big breakaway save and made some saves."
On Josh Doan being a point-per-game player: "I think a lightbulb has just gone off. I thought he was really bad the first two periods tonight. It was the worst he's played in a long time, but he snapped out of it and found a way to get on the scoresheet and help us win. What's happened with Doaner in the last month, a light bulb has gone off. When he plays like he knows he's better than everybody, he's better than everybody. It's just an inner confidence and belief thing, and he went through the middle third of the season trying to find his game and gripping his stick a little bit, wearing it. Now, he's out there having fun and he's simplified a lot and he's shooting pucks and putting pucks on net. He's getting rewarded."
On Josh Doan's game specifically: "He's playing with pace. He's moving his feet. He's so heavy on his stick. He just is relentless and refuses to lose his stick battles. He doesn't lose any. He's so heavy on his stick. The sky's the limit for him and he's having a heck of a run here."
Junior Forward Dylan Jackson:
On hat trick: "It feels good obviously. I couldn't have done it without my teammates. Grando gave me some good passes today, Ty as well. Obviously its a lot of skill, so I think we were just moving the puck really well."
On getting better as the season goes on: "It's hard to tell sometimes, but I was injured a lot last year. I thought, at first, I wasn't fully back to what I thought I could be at. So I think just playing games and getting used to the speed again helps a lot."
Graduate Forward Chris Grando:
On getting pucks to Dylan Jackson: "I know him and his brother have amazing skill sets so I just try and work and get the puck to them and let them do their thing and help them in any way I can."
On the last game at Mullett tomorrow: "It's going to be a good one. We are going to go out there and have a lot of fun and play hard and hopefully we get the result we want."
