FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Bad puck luck haunts the Arizona State ice hockey team (13-17-0) on the road as Grade "A" chances fall short in Friday's 2-1 loss to Alaska Fairbanks (14-9-2). The Sun Devils outshot the Nanooks 30-24 and found success on the power play with a goal by junior forward Lukas Sillinger

Alaska blocked more ASU shots than its own tallied shots on goal. ASU finished the game with 32 shots on goal compared to Alaska's 24. The Nanooks blocked 30 ASU shots through three frames. The Nanooks goaltender still had to make 31 saves to secure the Alaska win.

ASU enjoyed five power play opportunities in the game and finally wore down Alaska's penalty kill in the third period with a goal from Lukas Sillinger and assists credited to Ethan Szmagaj and Ryan Alexander. It's Sillinger's first goal in 10 games and keeps him third in the team's total point scoring this season with 17. Sillinger is tied for the team lead in power play goals with Matthew Kopperud, each have four on the season.

With the assist tonight, Alexander extends his point-scoring streak to four games dating back to Jan. 21, 2023 against then-No. 20 RIT.

Taking full advantage of their home ice, the Nanooks landed on the board first at the 10:23 mark in the opening frame. The Sun Devils chased the one goal lead for the entire second period while holding the Nanooks from tacking on an additional goal.

The Nanooks eventually extended their lead just two minutes into the third period with their second goal of the game.

After cutting the Alaska lead in half with Sillinger's goal in the third, ASU threw everything it could on net in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Bad puck luck in grade A scoring chances kept the Sun Devils trailing and despite multiple attempts to pull the goalie, Alaska took game one of the four-game home-and-home series.

The two teams will close out this weekend's series with tomorrow's matchup in Fairbanks starting at 9 pm MST. Stream is available to purchase on FloHockey and the radio call is available for free through KSUA 91.5 FM.
