TEMPE -- Arizona State sophomore goaltender TJ Semptimphelter has been named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List, given each year to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey.

Semptimphelter has started in all of ASU's 23 games in the 2022-23 season thus far. He is tied for the lead in the nation in shutouts with four this season against Bemidji State, Colgate, Alaska Anchorage, and Air Force. He tops the NCAA in minutes with 1357 and saves with 725, ranks fourth nationally in save percentage (.922) among goaltenders with at least 15 games played, and ranks 10th in wins with 11.

His four shutouts this season starts to close in on an ASU record for single season shutouts set by former goaltender Joey Daccord. In 2018-19, Daccord notched seven shutouts in a single season to claim the program record. That season, Daccord was named a top-five finalist for the Mike Richter Award. Daccord finished his ASU career with eight shutouts in three years of collegiate hockey.

Against then-No. 1 Denver on Dec. 2, 2022, Semptimphelter tied a program record for most saves in a single game with 53 in ASU's 3-2 loss to the reigning national champions.

Semptimphelter has tallied 10 nights with 40+ saves, six of those are 40+ save nights. Three of his four shutouts this season included 30+ saves (at Bemidji State, vs. Colgate, vs. Air Force).

The sophomore also excels off the ice and was awarded the Sun Devil Athletics Office of Student-Athlete Development Student-Athlete of the Semester this Fall. He was one of five hockey student-athletes to record a 4.00 GPA or above for Fall 2022.

The 41 watch list goalies come from the United States (18), Canada (13), and Sweden (6), along with one each from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, and Russia. Among those recognized are five freshmen, 10 sophomores, eight juniors, 14 seniors, and four graduate students.

A committee of voters — made up of a cross-section of coaches, administrators, scouts, and media — will pare this list down to approximately 15 names within the next three weeks and then ultimately choose the winner who will be announced in April during the NCAA Frozen Four. The HCA also presents a similar award to recognize the top female goalie in the NCAA. Past Richter Award Recipients 2014 - Connor Hellebuyck, UMass Lowell
