SAN FRANCISCO– Following a series win against No. 10 Washington, Sun Devil Softball earned their 20th conference win of the season and outright won the Pac-12 title on Sunday. Star-studded freshman Cydney Sanders earned her third Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor of the season announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
To cap off the regular season, Sanders led the Sun Devils to its first series win against Washington since 2013 after hitting three home runs, compiling eight RBIs in four hits over the weekend, none more important than a three-run home run on Saturday night in the 7th inning in a come-from behind win to put the Sun Devils up 8-4 to then clinch a share of the Pac-12 title.
The freshman would follow up her Saturday performance with an encore on Sunday afternoon, with another three-run home run in the fourth inning to give the Sun Devils a three-run advantage, and then a solo home run in the same game to tie the program record with 20 home runs in a season and clinching the outright Pac-12 title for Arizona State in a 5-2 win.
Sanders ends the regular season ranking second in the Pac-12 in batting average (.420), third in home runs (20), second in RBIs (61), and first in slugging percentage (.986), which all categories lead the team heading into the NCAA Softball tournament.
This is the third time that Sanders' has won Pac-12 Freshman of the Week this season, after last week being named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year where she helped the Sun Devils win the Pac-12 for the first time since 2011.
Fans can watch Cydney Sanders and the rest of the Sun devils this weekend as the road to Oklahoma City begins with Arizona State hosting the Tempe Regional on Friday, May 20 – Sunday, May 22 as they will host Cal State Fullerton, San Diego State and LSU. The Sun Devils will play at approximately 7:30 p.m against Cal State Fullerton to kick off postseason play.
