CLEVELAND, OH - Arizona State University has been selected as a winner of the 2021 Fields of Excellence® Award, Pioneer® Athletics announced.
Since The Fields of Excellence Award Program was established in 1997, over 1362 athletic fields from around the country have been honored. This year, colleges, universities, high schools, and Parks & Recreation Departments from all over the United States submitted photographs, letters of recommendation and application forms detailing their institutions' tedious athletic field maintenance program. Rigorous judging announced 100 winners from a league pool of applicants nationwide, with two athletic fields selected as Scholarship Winners.
The Sun Devil Athletics grounds crew has long been recognized as one of the best in the country and now they have even more hardware to back it up. Known for their unique designs, precise painting capabilities, and innovative maintenance techniques, ASU's staff has been a standard in the industry for years.
Led by Athletic Grounds Facilities Manager Brian Johnson, Arizona State maintains one of the premiere playing surfaces in the country. Assistant Manager of Athletic Grounds Josh Lenz along with Athletics Turf Supervisors Mike Klakulak, Steve Miller, and Michael Kuhn dedicate long hours to ensure several Sun Devil Athletic programs are provided with the best playing conditions.
"We want to thank Pioneer Athletics for this tremendous honor," Lenz remarked. "There are so many great grounds crews around the country, so to receive this award is truly special. Our entire staff had a hand in making this possible. It is refreshing to see all their hard work and long hours get rewarded."
This honor means Arizona State University will receive a certificate of recognition and a Fields of Excellence banner that they will be able to proudly display at their winning field. Arizona State University's winning field may also be used in Pioneer's upcoming publications and annual calendar.
Field maintenance goes unrecognized and often, underappreciated. The Fields of Excellence Award Program sheds light on the distinguished athletic fields and hardworking field crews who actively preserve them. Recognizing the hardworking individuals, schools and communities for their devotion and effort in keeping the space that is created to cultivate school spirit and community pride, is the aim for Pioneer® Athletics.
