TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman attacker Vanda Baksa added to her record-setting freshman campaign with three goals and an assist against No. 4 California on Friday. This performance was enough for her to earn Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week honors for the second time in as many weeks, and third of her career, as announced Tuesday afternoon by the conference. Her third honor is the most Newcomer of the Week honors for an individual in the MPSF this season after UCLA's Molly Renner's has earned two.
Her hat trick before the half kept it a two goal game headed into the second half against top-five ranked Cal. Baksa continues to her own in the ranks and is third in the NCAA in goals (64) and assists (42), leads the NCAA in points (106), and is second in field blocks with 18. The leaders of each category are all from non-conference schools, like Salem, Wagner College, and Villanova who all play schools outside of the MPSF. She has now recorded 3+ goals in 10 of the last 11 games.
Among MPSF ranks in a conference full of Olympians, she reigns supreme in every category– leading the conference in goals, assists, points, and field blocks.
Her three goals against California put her in sole possession of the program's all-time freshman goal record, with 64, passing Rowie Webster's 63 goals in 2006.
She is on pace to be a top player in program history, after taking sole possession of the single-season freshman goal, assist, and point categories. Her 64 goals are sixth most in a single season in program history, and the 42 assists she's tacked on are tied for fifth in a single season with Addison McGrath's 2008 total. The 106 points Baksa has tallied on the season not only continue to improve the freshman point record, but are third most in a single season behind Alicia Brightwell's 111 (2013) and Addison McGrath's 123 (2008).
Others Nominated: Rozanne Voorvelt (California)
