Water Polo Opens Conference Play on the RoadWater Polo Opens Conference Play on the Road
TEMPE, Ariz. – After posting a 3-1 record at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, and having freshman attacker Vanda Baksa named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Week for her record-setting weekend, No. 10 Sun Devil Water Polo (9-7) heads to California on March 5-6 to open up conference play. They face No. 12 San José State Spartans on Saturday the 5th at 1:00 pm MST and No. 1 Stanford on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 pm MST. The game against the Cardinal will be streamed here

ASU checked in this week at No. 10 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association polls, and is one of five top-10 teams in their conference. Vanda Baksa's Newcomer of the Week performance included her 22 point weekend which was highlighted by her eight goal performance in the 16-9 win over No. 17 Indiana on Sunday– which set a program record for single-game scoring, and was the most goals by a Sun Devil since 2015. Baksa's eight goals is just one off the MPSF single-game record, and is the most in the MPSF conference in 3 years (2/2/19).

San José State faced CSU East Bay last weekend, and won 14-6 to improve to 10-8 on the season. The Spartans have had two players receive Newcomer of the Week honors after week one and week five. All-time against SJSU, the Sun Devils are 23-10 including wins in 12 of their last 14 meetings and average over 10 goals per matchup.

Stanford moved up to No. 1 in the CWPA polls after being in the four spot last week, and comes off of their fifth Barbara Kalbus Championship after defeating UCLA in the championship game to improve to 11-1 on the season. The Sun Devils faced the Cardinal earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational, and lost 16-5. Sunday will be the one year anniversary of the ASU upset in Tempe over No. 2 Stanford at the time.
