Tempe, Ariz. – On the final day of the Sun Devil Classic, No. 23 Sun Devil softball (18-5) picked up one final win over Ball State (6-13) to sweep the classic with five wins and to end regular season tournament play for the Sun Devils.
 
Yanni Acuña hit her fifth home run of the weekend to keep the bats hot for ASU to complete the classic as the Sun Devils had 11 hits in the game. Junior Alynah Torres additionally had two doubles and sophomore Emily Cazares hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to push the Sun Devils ahead by seven runs on her birthday.
 
Lindsay Lopez got the start for the Sun Devils for the final game of the classic, she pitched the first two innings where she allowed one walk while facing eight batters. Senior Marissa Schuld came in with two outs in the top of the third to relieve sophomore Allison Royalty, and pitched the rest of the game for ASU. Schuld collected seven strikeouts in her 3 1/3 innings.

How It Happened
ASU 9, Ball State 2
  • Junior Alynah Torres had a leadoff double to left field in the first inning and senior Yani Acuña made it to first after being hit by a pitch, but both were stranded.
  • Sophomore Emily Cazares had a single to the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base. A hit by pitch for senior Halle Harger brought her to first, but BSU got things done in the circle to keep the game scoreless.
  • With no score going into the third, Royalty came in to relieve Lopez at the top of the third inning. The Cardinals scored in the top of the third off of a single to left field. A double to the middle brought in another run for BSU to lead 2-0. Schuld came in with two outs in the top of the third to get the final out.
  • With two strikeouts and a fly ball out to center field, Schuld got things done in the circle to begin the fourth inning. Senior Jazmyn Rollin was hit by a pitch to advance to first, and went to second off a single to left field by sophomore Savannah Price. Rollin made it to third off a stolen base, bringing Price to second, but both were stranded.
  • Freshman Cydney Sanders picked off the runner at first base to get the first out of the fifth inning as Schuld struck out the final batter to have a scoreless top of the fifth for the Sun Devils. In ASU's half of the fifth inning, a double from Sanders brought in Acuña to put the Sun Devils on the board. Hill reached second on a throwing error by BSU, scoring Sanders to tie the game. A single from Harger gave ASU its first lead of the game, 3-2.
  • Schuld struck out the three batters she faced in the top of the sixth to keep the Sun Devils up 3-2 going to the bottom of the sixth. With two on base in the bottom of the sixth, Acuña homered to center field to make it 6-2 for ASU. Hill walked to advance Sanders to second where she then advanced to third off an error by BSU. Another error by BSU advanced Hill to third, scoring Sanders. Then, Cazares hit a two-run home run to right field to give ASU the 9-2 lead.

The Sun Devils will play a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 15 against Marist at 6:00 p.m. at Farrington Stadium before opening up their first Pac-12 series against Oregon State on Friday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m in Tempe. All games will be broadcast via ASU Live Stream.
