Tempe, Ariz. – The Sun Devils started their weekend at Farrington Stadium with a shutout win on the opening day of the Sun Devil Classic which included 10 hits and three home-runs. No. 23 Arizona State softball (14-5) defeated the BYU Cougars (13-5) with a final score of 8-0 in five innings.
The Sun Devils continued their hot hitting as senior Yannira Acuña hit two home runs and Jazmyn Rollin hit a walk-off to secure the win against BYU.
True freshman Mac Morgan started in the circle for ASU and earned her eighth win of the season. Morgan shutout the Cougars striking out six of their batters in an efficient 66 pitches.

How It Happened
- After junior Alynah Torres flew out to start the first inning for ASU, Yannira Acuña hit a home run to center field to give the Sun Devils the early 1-0 lead. Back-to-back singles by Cydney Sanders and Jazmine Hill put two runners on base with only one out. Sophomore Emily Cazares was up to the box next where she hit an RBI double to score Sanders and advance Hill to third giving ASU the 2-0 advantage. With two still on base Marissa Schuld cleared the bases with an RBI triple doubling the Sun Devil lead 4-0.
- To lead off the second inning third baseman Savannah Price singled into right field. She was stranded on first at the end of the inning.
- Junior Jaz Hill hit a single into center to lead off the bottom of the third. Hill was left on first with the Sun Devils taking their 4-0 lead into the fourth inning.
- Acuña led off the bottom of fifth with another solo shot into left center. With her second home run of the game Acuña extended the Sun Devil lead to 5-0. Up next to bat Jaz Hill hit a triple into left field. Cazares drew a walk then stole second to give ASU two runners in scoring position. Jazmyn Rollin came up to bat next where she hit a homer into right center. This long ball ended the game early as it scored three runs and brought the score to 8-0.

Game Note Facts
- The Sun Devils faced the Cougars of BYU twice during the regular season when BYU traveled to Tempe and ASU picked up two wins as the Sun Devils lead the all-time series 15-1 where the first matchup came in 1974.
- This will be the second time in program history that ASU has taken on UMKC. In the first matchup between the programs in 2008, the Sun Devils won 15-2 by run-rule.
- The Sun Devils look to take a lead in the all-time series against Ball State as they are currently at a 1-1 tie where ASU won a 10-0 shutout over BSU back in 1998.
- ASU has a 3-0 lead over Rutgers in the all-time series where it defeated Rutgers 19-0 in a game back in 2010.
- In a series dating 50 years, ASU holds an all-time series lead over New Mexico State 41-7.
- Not only does Cydney Sanders lead her team in batting averages, but she also is eighth in the country for her average. She accumulated six hits over the weekend with two of those being home runs.
- Marissa Schuld continues to tally up strikeouts as she's had 42 throughout the season while pitching 29.1 innings and allowing just two walks.
- Yani Acuña's 15 RBIs on the season is good for 23rd in the country and her batting average is currently ninth in the country.
