AUSTIN, TX – Cold, windy weather didn't hold back No. 22 Sun Devil Softball on Friday afternoon as they shutout No. 23 Texas (5-7), 2-0, on their home field to begin the 2022 Texas Classic.

Arizona State (8-3), on its first road trip of the season, scored on a sac-fly by Alynah Torres into center field in the first inning and a wild pitch that allowed Jazmyn Rollin to hit home plate in the sixth.

Freshman Mac Morgan received her fourth win of the season with six innings pitched. Morgan threw three strikeouts, five foul outs and seven ground outs before being relieved by southpaw Lindsay Lopez after one batter in the top of the seventh.

The Sun Devils will have a day break before returning to Red & Charline McCombs Field on Sunday, Feb. 27, for a doubleheader against Texas State (8 a.m. MST) and UTSA (11:30 a.m. MST).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Bases were loaded at the top of the first inning, Alynah Torres hit a sac-fly to center field to advance runners, with Jazmine Hill running home to put the Sun Devils up 1-0.
  • Makenna Harper hit a deep double into right center field in the top of the fourth, but the Sun Devils were unable to drive her home.
  • With one out in the top of the fourth inning, the Longhorns player on first base attempted to steal second, but Jessica Puk connected her throw with Jazmyn Rollin at second to pick-off the runner.
  • After being walked in the top half of the sixth, Rollin attempted to steal second and was originally called out. Coach Ford swiftly moved from the dugout to challenge the second base umpire's call. Under further review, Rollin was deemed safe at second and would advance to third due to a wild pitch by Estelle Czech. Pinch-hitting for Puk, Jordyn VanHook, would watch another wild pitch go past her, allowing Rollin to score the second run for the Sun Devils.
  • Lindsay Lopez came in to relieve Morgan in the seventh inning. Lopez earned her first save of the season.
