TEMPE, Ariz. - With the 2022 Sun Devil Lacrosse season now a day away, now is a good time to learn more about the 44 members of the program.
Who better to talk about the state of the program than someone who was just a part of it. Recent Arizona State graduate Hanna Schuler, who was a defender for the Maroon & Gold from 2018-21, has secured her Master's degree and is now working in Sun Devil Athletics while pursuing a career in the communications field.
To give Sun Devil fans some insight on the team, Schuler is providing a position-by-position breakdown of the 2022 team. Earlier in the preseason, she dove into the defensive and midfielder units, followed by the goalkeeper competition. The series continues with a closer look at the attackers.
SEASON PREVIEW: ATTACKERS
Arizona State's attacking unit is made up of a nice blend of returning veterans and promising underclassmen. Nine different Sun Devils return from a group last year that helped ASU average over 16 goals/game, a figure that was Top-10 in the nation. Three members of a talented 2021 signing class join the fold, adding to the competition.
"The attackers have been working tirelessly with Graz (Assistant Coach Nicole Graziano) to develop their games," Head Coach Tim McCormack observed. "We feel very confident in our depth with the ability to bring in talented players off the bench who are ready to play."
Carley Adams and Emily Glagolev headline the group, returning to Tempe after being named to the Pac-12 All-Conference First Team. Katie Brodsky, Emily Munro, Emma Carlson, and Anna Winkeler are upperclassmen who will assume bigger roles due to the graduation of Kerri Clayton. The sophomore class of Rosie Davis, Mina Scott, and Riley Forman now have a year of collegiate experience. A freshman trio of McKenna Riley, Anna Thornton, and Tate Stokesberry round out a deep rotation.
"There has been a high expectation set by Carley and Glag (Emily Glagolev) in that room," McCormack added. "They have been pushing each other on the field, in the film room, and academically as well."
Here is a closer look at the 12 Sun Devil attackers:
Carley Adams (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
Coming back for her sixth season, Carley Adams is ready to make chaos on the field. Last season Adams started and played in all 16 games, making an impact in each one. She led the team and the Pac-12 conference with 58 goals and 77 points, creating a program record. Adams reached over 30 goals on the season after only 8 games, the fastest in Sun Devil lacrosse history. She tied a program record for scoring 8 goals in one game. Adams was recognized as Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week two times last season. She also earned a First Team Pac-12 All-Conference selection and was also selected to the Pac-12 Conference All-Tournament Team.
As a senior, Adams played and started in all 8 games and earned a career high of 6 assists during a game. Adams is a threat to goalies everywhere, during her senior season, she nearly had a perfect shot, with a .929 shot on goal percentage. She earned 4 ground balls, 5 draw controls, and created 5 caused turnovers.
As a junior, Adams appeared in 16 of the 18 games collecting 5 goals, 8 ground balls, and causing 2 turnovers. Adams scored her first goal of the season against No.22 USC and scored a season high of 2 goals against Presbyterian. As a sophomore, she appeared in all 18 games of the season and started in 7. She scored 8 goals throughout the season reaching a season high of 2 goals against Stetson and Manhattan. Being quick and athletic, she earned 10 draw controls including a season high of 4 against Liberty.
Emily Glagolev (Webster, NY)
Assist Queen, Emily Glagolev returns for her fifth season. Glagolev leads the team in assists, earning 38 in the 2021 season. Last season, Glagolev played and started in all 16 games. Her level-minded and relaxed play has allowed her to be consistent. She is ranked fifth for goals in a single season and is also ranked third for goals in her career. Last season, Glagolev scored 29 goals. She is also ranked fifth for points in a single career.
As a junior, Glagolev started in all 8 games and was very impactful. She finished the season being in the top three on the team for draw controls, goals, assists, and points. She record a hat trick twice during the season, one against UC Davis (2/8) and the other against Northwestern(2/16). Glagolev earned a career high of 6 draw controls in the win against Marquette.
During her sophomore season, Glagolev was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week. She played in 17 of the 18 games for the Sun Devils, starting all 17. Glagolev collected 33 assists which allowed her to lead the Pac-12 Conference in assists. She ended the season with 23 goals, which was the second highest on the team. She also ended with 25 ground balls, 12 draw controls, and 6 caused turnovers. As a freshman, Glagolev appeared in all 18 games and started in 13 of them. She had two hat tricks throughout the season, one being against Manhattan(2/14) and the other against Columbia (2/26). She scored the game winning goal in overtime against California to secure the Sun Devils their first conference win.
Emma Carlson (Lusby, MD)
Another attacker returning to the Sun Devils is Emma Carlson. Carlson played in 8 games last season. She earned 1 goal, 1 assist, and collected 3 ground balls. Emma's positive attitude and energy help uplift her teammates and is always pushing people to do their best. During her junior season, Carlson appeared in 6 and scored a career high of 2 goals, once against UC Davis and the other against Fresno State. After battling back from an injury her sophomore season,she saw action in 3 games. She scored her first collegiate goal and hat trick in the victory against Presbyterian.
Emily Munro (Highlands Ranch, CO)
Returning for her third season as a Sun Devil, Emily Munro is back and ready to compete. Munro played in all 16 games this season making an impact in each one. Munro's athleticism and speed make her a threat to defenders, unable to stop her as she makes her way to the goal. Munro scored 21 goals during the 2021 season while also earning 2 assists and collecting 7 ground balls.
Katie Brodsky (Mercer Island, WA)
Returning to Tempe, Katie Brodsky is ready to play her senior season. Last season, Brodsky played in 16 games and contributed 54 points.She earned a career high of 6 points against California in the Pac-12 Lacrosse Tournament. Brodsky's fast shot is also very accurate, scoring above 50% on her shots, she ended the season with 30 goals. She ended the season with 34 assists, setting a career high of 4 during two games, both against California. Brodsky's 54 points, 30 goals, and 58 shots on the season are ranked third on the team in all three categories.
During Brodsky's sophomore season, she played in 7 of the 8 games. Although the season was cut short, Brodsky still managed to create a career high of 4 points during the Marquette victory while ending with a total of 16 points. She ended the season with 11 goals, 18 shots, and 16 points ranking her fourth on the team in all three categories. When Brodsky was a freshman, she made four appearances during the season. She started off as a draw specialist, earning 2 crucial possessions in a comeback attempt against Columbia. She also created a caused turnover in the victory over Stetson.
Anna Winkeler (Allen,TX)
Anna Winkeler returns to Tempe for another season. Winkeler started in 6 games her first season. Her accurate shot, being on goal with all 15 of her shots, make her a threat to the goalie and defenders. Not only is she accurate but she scored in every game she played in during her freshman season. She ended her freshman season with 11 goals, 3 assists, and 1 draw control.
Rosie Davis (Bowie,MD) / Riley Forman (Doylestown,PA) / Mina Scott (Kennett Square,PA)
Three sophomore returners for the attack unit are Rosie Davis, Riley Forman, and Mina Scott. Davis made an appearance during the victory against Fresno State and recorded her first assist. Scott appeared in 5 games for the Sun Devils, scoring 1 goal against San Diego State and creating a caused turnover against Fresno State. Forman played in the victory against Fresno State and collected a ground ball. The three of them are working hard in practice and getting better every day.
Mckenna Riley, Anna Thornton, and Tate Stokesberry are the three freshmen joining the attacking unit. They come to Tempe eager to learn and get better. Riley is a strong attacker and has a strong lacrosse I.Q. which allows her to sneak by her defenders. Thornton's athleticism and skill allows her to have a strong play making ability. Stokesberry uses her agility and quickness to worry defenders, allowing her to score and create assists.
