TEMPE, Ariz. - Sun Devil Lacrosse Head Coach Taryn VanThof finalized her first schedule while at the helm in Tempe.
The 2023 Arizona State Lacrosse schedule is official and it features a challenging slate with several significant matchups. During the campaign, the Sun Devils will play five different opponents ranked in both the USA Lacrosse Magazine and Inside Lacrosse Preseason Top-25 a total of eight times.
"I am excited to announce our 2023 Spring Schedule," Head Coach Taryn VanThof remarked. "We have some new additions to our out of conference schedule, including a series of road contests set to prepare us for Pac-12 play. The team is excited to be on this ride together and have the opportunity to showcase our play across the country."
VanThof wasted no time in putting together a 17-game campaign that will test her team from start to finish. After opening up at home for just the third time in program history, the Maroon & Gold will hit the road for five consecutive games. Arizona State will match up with some new foes, playing four programs for the first time in 2023. Sun Devil fans will want to take advantage of every opportunity to see ASU play at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, as they play only six total home games.
Not only do the Sun Devils boast one of the nation's toughest schedules, they will also face some of the top individual talent in the nation. ASU is going to see seven of Inside Lacrosse's Preseason Top-50 players and several other All-American candidates as a result of the caliber of opponents on the 2023 slate.
Coming off a historic 2022 campaign, Sun Devil Lacrosse continued to emerge as one of the up-and-coming programs in the nation. ASU is no stranger to a difficult schedule, having navigated one of the toughest in the nation last year. The Maroon and Gold finished the regular season with the No. 12-rated strength of schedule, facing 11 Top-25 teams in 19 games. Because of their success in those games (11-8), Arizona State finished with a RPI of 26, which continued to climb down the stretch. During a span from March and into April, ASU played five straight games against ranked opponents, one of only eight teams in the nation that had to take on that challenge in 2022.
With Head Coach Taryn VanThof now in charge, the program's philosophy on scheduling has not changed. A big reason why is the fact that ASU keeps adding a plethora of new talent who chose to be Sun Devils to have the opportunity to play in the biggest of games on the most important stages. While it will be hard to replace the production of Emily Glagolev and Carley Adams, the first All-Americans in program history, as well as the other 14 members of last year's senior class, Arizona State is loaded with individual star power returning to the team. Here is a closer look at the 2023 Sun Devil Lacrosse Schedule:
Saturday, Feb. 18 vs St. Bonaventure (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
The Taryn VanThof era opens in style, as the Sun Devils host St. Bonaventure in the season opener. VanThof will make her debut as the head coach of the Sun Devil Lacrosse program on Feb. 18. For just the third time in program history, Arizona State will start their season at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. ASU is 5-0 all-time in home openers, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 94-42. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Friday, Feb. 24 at Penn State (University Park, PA/Panzer Stadium)
The first stop on a five-game road trip is to University Park, where the Sun Devils will take on Penn State in their first road game of the season. The Nitanny Lions are out of the Big Ten Conference, arguably the nation's deepest league. Arizona State has had success in Big Ten country before, defeating No. 14 Rutgers last season on the road. While this is not one of the eight games against preseason Top-25 competition, Penn State spent a majority of last season ranked, reaching as high as No. 13 in the polls. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Sunday, Feb. 26 at Towson (Towson, MD/Tiger Field)
Arizona State will continue an east coast swing when they travel to Maryland to take on Towson. This will be a homecoming of sorts for several Sun Devils, as the roster boasts four individuals from the lacrosse-rich state. Towson went 9-8 last year, including a 5-1 CAA record, spending time in the Top-25 rankings. It represents the first meeting between the two programs.
Friday, March 3 at #19/16 Jacksonville (Jacksonville, FL/Rock Stadium)
A major early season test will come in the form of a matchup against 2022 NCAA Tournament Participant Jacksonville. The Dolphins have emerged over the past few seasons, winning a game in the NCAA Tournament each of the past two season. They are ranked No. 16 by Inside Lacrosse in the preseason poll, representing the first of eight ranked contests for the Sun Devils. It is the program's second-ever trip to Florida, previously defeating Stetson on the road in the 2018 season. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
Sunday, March 5 at #7/7 Florida (Gainesville, FL/Donald R. Dizney Stadium)
Taryn VanThof makes her highly-anticipated return to Florida as the Sun Devils make the trip to Gainesville for a showdown with the Gators. In the second-game of a home-and-home series, ASU heads to No. 7 Florida after the Gators came to Tempe last season. Florida is the highest ranked team in the preseason on the Sun Devils' schedule. VanThof spent six years on the staff at Florida under Head Coach Amanda O'Leary, earning a NCAA Tournament bid in every season, culminating in two consecutive Elite Eight appearances. The homecoming also marks an end of a five-game stretch of non-conference games to open the season.
Friday, March 17 at #15/19 USC (Los Angeles, CA/McAlister Field)
In what could be the last trip to Los Angeles before they depart for the Big Ten Conference, Arizona State wraps up a five-game road trip when they take on USC. The Pac-12 opener against the Trojans may represent the final appearance for the Sun Devils at McAlister Field, with the timing of USC's departure still to be determined. The Maroon & Gold have great memories at McAlister Field, including a 20-9 road victory over USC in 2021. At the time, the 20 goals matched the most that USC had allowed in a game. This will be the first meeting betwen the two sides since ASU defeated the Trojans in the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament Semifinals. In an epic matchup between two Top-25 teams, the Sun Devils pulled-off a dramatic 13-12 victory to earn a berth into the Pac-12 Tournament Championship.
Friday, March 24 vs Oregon (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
For the first time in over a month, Arizona State will have a chance to play in front of their home crowd when they host Oregon on March 24. It is the lone contest against a non-ranked team during a grueling six-game stretch that will give ASU one of the toughest strength of schedule ratings in the country. The Sun Devils have won five-straight games in the series, including the last three games held in Tempe.
Sunday, March 26 vs #25/22 Colorado (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
The first ranked matchup at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium occurs when preseason Top-25 Colorado comes to Tempe. Arizona State swept the season series for the first time, outscoring the Buffaloes by a combined score of 36-14 in the two meetings. The Maroon & Gold have won three of the last four meetings, including the past two in Tempe.
Friday, March 31 at #11/10 Stanford (Stanford, CA/Maloney Field at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium)
Arizona State gets their first crack at defending Pac-12 regular season and tournament champion Stanford when they travel to Cagan Stadium. The Cardinal are projected to be one of the nation's top teams yet again. The Sun Devils are still looking for their first road win over Stanford, the Pac-12 stadium they have yet to win in. ASU and Stanford last faced-off in the 2022 Pac-12 Tournament Championship game.
Sunday, April 2 at California (Berkeley, CA/California Memorial Stadium)
The Sun Devils remain on the road for the second leg of the Bay Area trip, taking on California for the first of two meetings. Arizona State has eight victories over the Golden Bears since 2018, their most against any team. ASU has won each of the last seven meetings, including the last two in Berkeley. The Maroon & Gold has also defeated California in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament each of the past two seasons. It will be a battle of first year head coaches, as former Temple assistant Jennifer Wong was hired by Cal this offseason.
Friday, April 7 vs #11/10 Stanford (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
In a rematch of the previous weekend, the Bay Area programs make the return trip to Tempe. Stanford revisits the site in which they suffered one of only two Pac-12 loses, as the Sun Devils knocked off the Cardinal for the first time in program history last March. ASU claimed an impressive 18-11 victory over No. 22 Stanford, giving them at least one victory over every Pac-12 team.
Sunday, April 9 vs California (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
The Golden Bears make the turnaround trip on April 9. Since falling in the first two matchup between the two teams in Tempe, Arizona State has won the past four contests at home. During the Sun Devils seven-game winning streak in the series, the Golden Bears have been outscored 122-78.
Friday, April 14 at Oregon (Eugene, OR/Pape Field)
Coach VanThof's team embarks on their final road trip of the season, wrapping up their games away from home, the second road swing of four or more games. It starts in Eugene with the second matchup with Oregon. The Sun Devils pulled out a dramatic overtime victory last season at Pape Field, one of their five-straight wins in the series. ASU is 2-1 all-time against Oregon at Pape Field.
Sunday, April 16 at #25/22 Colorado (Boulder, CO/Kittredge Field)
Arizona State completes the road portion of their Pac-12 schedule with a date in Boulder, a place where they won for the first time ever last season. The Maroon & Gold picked up an impressive 16-8 victory on the road against Colorado last season, part of the season sweep of the Buffaloes. Colorado is the final of five road contests against preseason ranked teams currently on the Sun Devils' schedule.
Friday, April 21 at San Diego State (San Diego, CA/Aztec Lacrosse Field)
The Sun Devils return to a familiar site when they continue their road trip with a stop in San Diego for a matchup with the Aztecs. Arizona State has played San Diego State each season, compiling a 4-2 record. It is the most wins for the Maroon & Gold against a non-conference program. This is the last meeting between the two teams as non-conference foes, as UC Davis and San Diego State join the Pac-12 Conference as affiliate members next year. ASU defeated SDSU 16-6 in 2022 and won their first road game against the Aztecs 20-11 in 2021.
Sunday, April 23 UC Davis (at San Diego State/Aztec Lacrosse Field)
ASU remains in San Diego to wrap up non-conference play when they face UC Davis on Sunday, April 23 in a game hosted by San Diego State. It represents the third meeting between the two program, with the Sun Devils outscoring UC Davis 35-26 in the two previous matchups. This is the last meeting between the two teams as non-conference foes, as UC Davis and San Diego State join the Pac-12 Conference as affiliate members next year.
Friday, April 28 vs #15/19 USC (Tempe, AZ/Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium)
A enormously decorated and impactful graduating class will be honored following the game against USC, the final home game of the 2023 campaign. Not only will Arizona State seniors be playing their final game in front of the Sun Devil faithful, it could also represent the final Pac-12 Conference game against USC, with their conference status still to be determined. Arizona State defeated USC on the same field the two teams will be competing on in April, advancing to the Pac-12 Tournament Championship with a 13-12 semifinal victory over the Trojans in 2022. This is the final game of a 17-game regular season.
Pac-12 Lacrosse Tournament (May 3-6, 2023/Berkeley, CA)

A total of 29 teams make the NCAA Tournament, with 15 automatic bids handed out to conference tournament champions, leaving 14 at large bids selected by a committee.
