San Francisco– Arizona State and the Pac-12 conference have formed a partnership with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) that will feature an annual home-and-home series between the member schools. The women's team will host Grambling state on Nov. 11 as the Men's team will travel to Texas Southern on Nov. 13. Read below for more information on the partership with HBCU's and the SWAC.

Background:

The Pac-12 and Southwestern Athletic (SWAC) Conferences formed a basketball educational and scheduling partnership that will feature a first-of-its-kind annual home-and-home series between member institutions.

The men's and women's basketball partnership is aimed at creating both a forum for competition, as well as promotion and education around issues of anti-racism and social justice. The partnership is set to begin in Nov. 2022, with six matchups for the initial men's and women's competitions determined to yield a total of twelve games in its first season.

The Pac-12 and @theswac named the first-of-its-kind partnership between Autonomy 5 and HBCU leagues not only from a scheduling standpoint but also for educational purposes.

Viewed as a win-win for both conferences as their respective missions are closely aligned, the Pac-12 and the SWAC are united in their efforts to expand the positive impact of the game of basketball well beyond the court. Both a game changer and opportunity for collaboration, a partnership of this significant magnitude has never occurred in the history of HBCU Athletics. The Pac-12 and SWAC have made a joint commitment towards playing an active role in diversity initiatives and impactful collaborations. Through the creation of this inclusive and meaningful partnership, the Conferences will help raise awareness of the important role of HBCUs in higher education.

Student-athletes will participate in social justice and anti-racism educational components as part of the games. Programming for the student-athletes will be a collaboration between campus leadership from the two participating men's basketball programs. In addition, campus athletics departments will facilitate private meetings between athletics directors and their respective senior staff as part of the partnership.

Based on the Selma to Montgomery trip that the Pac-12 and SWAC experienced together in July of 2022, the Conferences would like to partner with the Legacy Museum / EJI. Through this partnership, the Conferences would work with leaders from the organization(s) to create educational tools, resources and opportunities for Student-Athletes, Coaches and Administrators to become civic leaders on their campuses with a focus on social justice to make an impact in their communities and beyond. In exchange, the Pac-12 and SWAC would use the twelve "Legacy Series" games to promote the Legacy Museum and work that the EJI does to create a more equitable country.
