BEMIDJI, Minn. – Busted dam alert! The Arizona State men's ice hockey team disrupted Bemidji State's season opener with a 3-0 shutout victory on Friday night at Sanford Center. ASU goaltender TJ Semptimphelter recorded his first collegiate career shutout with 40 saves.
Three ASU (1-2-0) skaters joined in on the scoring action including Matthew Kopperud, Jackson Niedermayer, and Ty Murchison (EN).
Friday night against BSU (0-1-0) was the third-straight game in which the Sun Devils scored the opening goal. ASU was outshot 11-4 in the first frame, but it was no matter. Dylan Jackson delivered a slick pass across the slot to Matthew Kopperud who took advantage of the two-on-one to net his first goal of the season. Kopperud finished the 2021-22 season tied second in the single season program record book for points with 40.
ASU maintained the 1-0 lead through the second period courtesy of the performance by TJ Semptimphelter between the pipes. The sophomore tendie secured 31 saves after only two periods.
Despite being outmatched in the shot attempt category, ASU blocked 21 shots by BSU skaters.
Jackson Niedermayer made the lineup for the first time this season and established his presence against the Beavers. The sophomore scored ASU's second goal a little after three minutes into the third period. Ryan Alexander and Demetrios Koumontzis hustled behind the Beaver net to toss a sneaky pass on the outside of the circle to Niedermayer who laid a one-timer past the BSU netminder.
Ty Murchison tossed a shot from deep in the ASU offensive zone that went coast-to-coast for the empty net goal to hand ASU the 3-0 win.
The win on Friday night is ASU's first in the state of Minnesota.
