Stockton, MO – Sun Devil Triathlon will choose their starting point behind Queens University at the 2022 National Championships after they defeated University of South Dakota, University of Denver and USF on Saturday morning.
Arizona State scored 123 points as a team at the West Regional National Qualifier at the NCAA Heartland Triathlon Cup. Freshman Heidi Jurankova (1:01:14) claimed her first collegiate victory with junior Amber Schlebusch (1:01:14) following up in second place.
"It was definitely another strong performance and win by the Sun Devils today. They set themselves up for success and were pushing each other to have the fastest time in each section of the race," head coach Cliff English said. "A lot was at stake with the race and we put ourselves in the best position possible for the Championships."
Czech Republic native Jurankova had the fastest run (17:49) and second fastest cycle (31:49) time in the competition. Schlebusch was right behind Jurankova with a run time of 17:50.
The pair alone earned 55 points for the Sun Devils.
"It was really cool to see another freshman win today and that race between Heidi and Amber was just raging at the front," English said. "They were pretty much neck and neck for the last mile of the race, pushing each other."
Senior Liberty Ricca (1:01:57) and freshman Naomi Ruff (1:02:20) were not far behind the top pair as they finished third, fourth and fifth to round out the top-five finishers of the qualifier.
Sophomore Alexe Coursol (1:03:06) and freshman Faith Dasso (1:03:09) finished 10th and 11th, respectively while freshman Madison Judas (1:04:11) placed 15th. Sophomores Evan Welsh (1:02:41) and Camile Buchanan (1:02:50) did not score for the team today.
"Evan Welch had the strongest race I've seen her compete this past year and half, I'm really proud of her," English stated.
The Sun Devils will conclude the season in Tempe at Tempe Town Lake North Beach on Nov. 12 as they look to make it six straight national titles for the program.
