TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Hockey (2-4-0) was unable to pick up a series sweep in Mullett Arena's opening weekend in the 4-0 loss after a slow start against Colgate (1-3-0). The Sun Devils ultimately lost the shot battle 42-30 and were unable to capitalize on power play opportunities for the second straight night.

Head coach Greg Powers talked about the struggles tonight and gave credit to Colgate on playing their game.

"They defended a little bit harder. But at the end of the day, there were no big adjustments. They always had five back. They played a really good game and they deserved the win," said Powers.

Despite TJ Semptimphelter's 38 saves on the night, the Sun Devils saw an early 1-0 deficit as Colgate struck first this time around just seven minutes into the game.

Arizona State got on the power play thanks to a Raiders hooking call with six minutes to go in the first period, but Colgate was able to kill the man-advantage despite a barrage of shots on goal in the two-minute span for the Sun Devils. The shot battle was all square at 11 shots apiece after the first frame.

Colgate extended their lead to 2-0 with 4:15 left in the second period. The Sun Devils were on a five-on-three man advantage for 1:44 but didn't capitalize on the opportunity and ASU faced a two-goal deficit going into the third period.

The Raiders thought they had made it a 3-0 game, but the Sun Devils challenged an offsides call which was overturned keeping the score 2-0. Despite chances by ASU, Colgate extended their lead to three with 16:07 left in the game.

Colgate scored on the power play after two roughing penalties by the Sun Devils to make it 4-0.

The Sun Devils will return home next weekends for two games against Colorado College on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22. Both puck drops will be slated for 7:00 pm MST and can be streamed via Pac-12 Insider.
