DULUTH, Minn. – For the second consecutive night, the Arizona State men's ice hockey team landed on the board first against No. 5 Minnesota Duluth (2-0-0) at AMSOIL Arena. The tides turned late in the second period as the Sun Devils (0-2-0) suffered four unanswered goals in a 4-1 loss to complete the series on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate forward and alternate captain Demetrios Koumontzis tallied the sole ASU goal with assists from graduate forward Chris Grando and sophomore defenseman Ethan Szmagaj. Koumontzis' goal is his first since Nov. 26, 2021 versus then-No. 20 Bemidji State. The Arizona native spent the second half of the 2021-22 season out due to injury.
ASU's lineup remained the same from Saturday night's introductory match, including TJ Semptimphelter between the pipes. The sophomore made 39 saves as UMD outshot ASU 43-30. Both teams enjoyed three one-man advantage opportunities and UMD capitalized on two while ASU couldn't convert. At the dot, the Sun Devils beat the Bulldogs, 34-22.
UP NEXT: ASU continues its 10 day road trip in the state of Minnesota, setting its sights on Bemidji State on Oct. 7-8. The two-game series streams on FloHockey for a fee.
