EUGENE, Oregon - Arizona State track and field's homegrown talent led the way on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field. Tucson, Arizona native Turner Washington finished second in the shot put, and freshman Dayton Carlson from Gilbert, Arizona nearly set a program record en route to qualifying for Friday's 800m final. Washington's silver medal was the fifth medal of his career, and Carlson's 1:47.45 was a personal best and :0.5 away from Pete Richardson's 1984 1:46.95 program record. Washington is once again a first team All-American, and Carlson can reach All-American First-Team honors with an eighth place or better finish in the finals.
The Championships continue Thursday with the first of the women's events. Beatrice Llano and Shelby Moran both compete in the hammer, followed by Jorinde van Klinken in the shot put and Adriana Tatum in the 200m dash. All the action is streaming on ESPN this week.

Turner Washington didn't defend his outdoor shot put crown, but he did end on the podium once again thanks to a season's best sixth round heave. Washington was in third after three throws, but used a huge final effort to go 21.05m/69-¾ and jump into second place behind Texas' Adrian Piperi (21.52m/70-7.25). Alabama's Isaac Odugbesan took bronze 20.48m/67-2¼.
Dayton "Daytona" Carlson continues to be one of the most electric runners in the country. Starting heat two in lane two, Carlson actually dropped to last in the field during the race but used a huge kick in the final 200m to excel past the competition to finish third in the heat and eighth overall, qualifying on time. After opening his freshman campaign at 1:50.96, Carlson has shaved three seconds off that time and is now one of just two freshmen in the 800m finals.
ASU had runners in the 400m. Justin Robinson and Gamali Felix both had strong showings at the NCAA West Prelims but couldn't keep it going in Eugene where they finished 18th and 24th, respectively.
