SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Sun Devil Women's Golf completed the first round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championship on Friday afternoon.

The 2022 NCAA Men's and Women's Golf Championship will be hosted by Arizona State and The Thunderbirds at Grayhawk Golf Club. Scottsdale will be at the center of the golf universe for the next two weeks, with the premier event in collegiate women's golf in the second year of it's three-year run at Grayhawk.

Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team was in contention for the lead and near the top of the standings most of the afternoon until an intense wind picked up, reaching upwards of 30 mph at some points of the round. By the end of the day, the Sun Devils (+14/302) found themselves in 16th place and only six strokes out of the Top-8 in the middle of a crowded leaderboard. ASU is currently ahead of No. 3 South Carolina, No. 5 San Jose State, and No. 6 Oklahoma State, as many of the top teams that played in the afternoon struggled.

Freshman Calynne Rosholt led the way, making her NCAA Championship debut in style. She looked like a veteran while delivering a 72 (E), which has her tied for sixth after the first 18 holes. She sits just four strokes back of overall leader No. 1 Rose Zhang, with Rosholt carding the third-best round of the afternoon session. She spread out three birdies, but managed to finish her final eight holes under par. Both Alexandra Forsterling and Grace Summerhays are in the top-half of a loaded NCAA field and look to make a move up the leaderboard tomorrow.

ASU will once again be paired with Virginia and Alabama, starting the second round on the 1st hole at 7:25 AM MST. Visit Golfstat for live scoring throughout the tournament.

FRONT NINE
The Maroon & Gold started their round on the back nine, making the front nine the finish. The wind began to pick up later in the day, making the front nine a challenge. It didn't stop Calynne Rosholt from finishing at even, including birdies on three and seven. Grace Summerhays added a birdie on four, while Ashley Menne did the same on seven to highlight the final nine holes.

BACK NINE
Arizona State was able to start out the day strong, reaching as high as second in the team standings thanks to a great effort on the first nine holes. The team's first birdie of the tournament came courtesy of Calynne Rosholt, who accomplished the feat on the par-four 14th hole. Both Alexandra Forsterling and Grace Summerhays recorded back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th hole, making the turn with momentum. Forsterling led the way with a one-under performance for the first half of the day, while Rosholt showed what was to come with an even effort. Summerhays showed tremendous poise in bouncing back from a tough first hole to go two-under the remainder of the back nine.

QUOTABLES
Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye
"Grayhawk was in fantastic condition. We learned a lot from today's round and will make adjustments tonight. The biggest thing was the wind in the afternoon. Starting in the morning tomorrow should help us with the conditions."

"Calynne was fantastic today. That is what we expect out of her. She has played so well all season and it is exciting to see her get off to such a great start."

Freshman Calynne Rosholt
"It was fun to compete at the NCAA Championship for the first time. The staff at Grayhawk have done a great job of putting on a wonderful event. I am grateful to be a part of this experience."

"I left some shots out there today, but I still feel good about the performance. The course was challenging and the wind added another obstacle. I was able to gather information and will be able to use that tomorrow."
