PHOENIX – Sun Devil Baseball fell in its rubber match against the Oregon Ducks, 15-5.
A shoddy defensive effort, too many free passes and a slow start offensive would doom ASU, despite the team clinching a spot in the Pac-12 Baseball Tournament later this month due to other losses around the conference.
Ryan Campos had a career-high four hits and Sean McLain recorded his third multi-hit game of the weekend with three. ASU recorded double digit hits (14) for the 23rd time in the last 28 games and 32nd time overall in 52 games this year.
Joe Lampe extended his hit streak to 21 games, tying Spencer Torkelson (2019) for the third-longest streak at ASU since 2010. Nate Baez recorded his 21st double of the year, the 10th-most at ASU since 1998 and second-most since 2010 (David Greer, 23 in 2016).
The Sun Devils got the first run on the board in the first inning, with a Nate Baez single, driving in Sean McLain. The third inning started the scoring for the Ducks, as Tyler Meyer walked three Ducks to load the bases, making way for the cleanup hitter who cleared the bases due to a misread fly ball in the outfield. Another run was tacked on in the inning with a final single to drive in the runner at second.
The three-run lead for the Ducks would widen with a five-run fourth inning. The initial three of the inning were earned through hits, but the fourth served as a real blow due to a double turning into a run, as the ball was booted around at second and third base to make the score 8-1. A single and double from the next two batters would cap off a five run inning, putting the score at 9-1.
The Ducks would score two runs in each of the next three innings to add to an already lopsided scoreline. The Sun Devils would get four in the next three, as well, but would serve as a small significance as the game would finish 15-5.
The Sun Devils will conclude the regular season on the road next weekend at Washington State in Pullman, Wash., beginning Thursday with a three-game set broadcast on Pac-12 Washington. ASU will be on the airwaves for the series on KDUS 1060 AM on Thursday and Saturday and on KAZG 1440 AM on Friday.
