By Connor Smith

16 seniors on one mission. Elevate the Sun Devil Lacrosse program. Mission accomplished.

Over the past 4-5 years, Arizona State has established themselves as one of the top up-and-coming programs in the nation, thanks to the efforts of this senior class. In the past two seasons, the team has recorded a 19-12 record, accomplishing several program firsts. Monumental road wins against USC, Rutgers, and Colorado combined with a 14-4 home record over the past three seasons have caught the attention of lacrosse fans and followers from around the country. The program has improved every season and is now in a position for a NCAA Postseason berth and the Pac-12 Regular Season Championship.

Now we take the time to take a look back at their careers. It is a group that will be remembered for their passion, work ethic, dedication, and commitment. They were fantastic representatives of Sun Devil Lacrosse on and off the field. The legacy they leave can't just be measured in wins and losses or statistics. To understand this type of impact, you need to look deeper.

The following is the second edition of the “Letters to Lacrosse” series, in which members of the senior class reflect on their careers. It is hard to answer the question, what has Lacrosse meant to you? The seniors give it a shot as they prepare to get recognized. Get some insight “in their own words” on the sport and the journey. A dedication to the 2022 Sun Devil Lacrosse Senior Class:

CARLEY-ADAMS.webp

#40 CARLEY ADAMS - FORT LAUDERDALE, FL

My biggest takeaway from playing lacrosse is that if you are doing something you love, with people that you love, success is inevitable. No team in the country has had more growth or had more fun than Sun Devil Lacrosse.

This sport has been there for me my entire life. I often think about how crazy it is that lacrosse has given me my closest friends, my happiest memories, and the opportunity to travel to the coolest places. Out of gratitude and pure enjoyment, I don’t think I’ll ever stop having a stick in my hand.

Carley Adams will leave Tempe with her name all over the program record books. Originally joining Arizona State back in 2016, Adams has been part of Sun Devil Lacrosse from the very start. Throughout her five-year career, she has worked hard to become one of the nation’s best attackers. She is the first All-Region selection and a First Team Pac-12 All-Conference member. In 72 career games and 48 starts, Adams has 129 goals and 51 assists. She has also added 52 ground balls, 18 caused turnovers, and 25 draw controls. She is a multi-year team captain and a 2021 IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll member.

EMMA-CARLSON.webp

#45 EMMA CARLSON - LUSBY, MD

Thank you for being a constant in my life and for giving me an opportunity to pursue greater things through you like a college education, the life-long friendships, mentorship’s, and a transformative amount of self-growth. Hours spent in the backyard with my dad in the rain, snow, and the humid summer heat dodging trees, shooting on my knees, running around with ankle weights, all paid off. I always believed, in those years, that no one loved lacrosse more than I did. And now that it’s time to say goodbye, I get to look back and realize that I’m still the kid who made it out of Lusby, Maryland to pursue every little athletes’ dream of being a division one lacrosse player.

To sum it up- I learned a lot about who I am as an athlete and as a person on the field, and I’m going to carry all of the lessons, memories, obstacles and successes with me through every chapter of my life. And one day, if I’m blessed enough, I’ll be able to pass those things down to my own little carls. I’ll never forgot what you’ve done for me, my character, and my perspective on life. Never change for anyone girl. Love you forever. Go Devils.

Yours truly,

Emma Carlson (better known as Carl)

EMILY-GLAGOLEV.webp

#12 EMILY GLAGOLEV - WEBSTER, NY

Lacrosse has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I don’t think I truly even know truly how much it has meant to me yet. It has given me a chance to dream big. It has shown me that if you put in work, confidence will follow. It has taught me to be critical, not to bring yourself down, but to learn and get better. Lacrosse has given me so much and I will always be grateful that my parents didn’t want to watch my brother play baseball and gave him a stick. All along this journey I have made friends that I will have for the rest of my life and made so many amazing memories. Lacrosse has meant way more to me than I could ever put into words and I wouldn’t change anything about the experiences that I have had.

Emily Glagolev is in the midst of a record-setting career in Tempe, developing into one of the nation’s premier attackers. In her five-year career she has played in 74 games, making 69 starts. She has scored 124 goals and dished out an incredible 142 assists. Glagolev contributes in every facet of the game, collecting 81 ground balls, causing 28 turnovers, and earning 36 draw controls. Thank you for being a game enriched with sacred history and culture. Thank you for all the ups and downs, and all the in-betweens. Thank you for teaching me that everything in life is very much interconnected. Thank you for providing me with some of my best friends for life and for teaching me a lot about myself. Lastly, thank you for being the sport my dad and I cherished together growing up.

OLIVIA-KROAH.webp

#15 OLIVIA KROAH - MASSILLON, OH

For the past 12 years, I have devoted my life to a sport that has rewarded me in ways that I will forever be thankful for. As I reflect on my lacrosse career, I have realized that my most valuable memories are with the 43 women that have created an environment where playing lacrosse feels like being a little kid again. Our program flourishes off of individual creativity and the beauty of each person’s authentic self. Words can’t describe the gratitude I have for this program, team, and sport. It’s incredibly hard to close this chapter of my life, but I am so honored to have been apart of Arizona State Women’s Lacrosse program. Thank you ASU, forks up.

KYLIE-KROEGER.webp

#33 KYLIE KROEGER - SAN DIEGO, CA

Words cannot describe how lacrosse has impacted my life. I will never forget the first day that I picked up a stick, 10 years ago. I remember so clearly that the team I joined (shoutout Mad Dog Lacrosse) wanted me to try goalie on my first day, it’s laughable knowing myself now. Thanks dad for having my back and insisting that I play midfield, it’s been a love-hate relationship with that position haha. I am so fortunate to have a family that shares the same love for lacrosse as I do, and without their persistence in starting a high school lacrosse team for me, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Being a part of one inaugural team is lucky, but two is just crazy!

With anything, there are highs and lows, but I have never been more grateful for all that lacrosse encompasses. How the power of one single play can influence an entire team's momentum. How when you have nothing but love for the sport you can unlock possibilities you never thought were imaginable. I have met the most respectable and inspirational people I will ever meet through this sport. I have gained endless amounts of memories that will remain with me forever. It’s emotional to think about saying goodbye and to know that there will come a time when I will not be able to play with 45 of my best friends, but I know that because of my time here at ASU I am more than prepared for what life brings. I am proud to say I wouldn’t change one thing about my college experience.

Thank you lacrosse, you have given me things beyond explanation that I will cherish forever. I will never forget you. Forks Up Forever!

Kylie Kroeger has been a constant force for the Sun Devils, making 74 appearances over her five-year career. Kroeger has earned 38 starts and contributed in every way imaginable, stuffing the stat sheet. She has 43 goals, 20 assists, 73 ground balls, 28 caused turnovers, and 91 draw controls. Kroeger has also been a Pac-12 All-Academic selection every year she was eligible. Part of the inaugural 2018 team.
