TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo (14-11, 2-5) heads to Los Angeles this weekend as the 5 seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Championship Tournament. They will face the 4 seeded, and No. 6 ranked, California Golden Bears (15-4, 3-3) in the first round, Friday April 22 at 2:30 pm. The game can be watched via a paid subscription with MPSF TV.
ASU is no stranger to facing California in the MPSF Tournament after last season's 12-8 win over the then 4 seed Golden Bears. In that win, Chelsea Karimazondo tallied 19 saves which was the fourth most single-game saves by a Sun Devil in program history. That win sent the Sun Devils to the semifinals where they then dropped to UCLA, but ultimately received the last at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.
The Sun Devils have faced California twice this season and are winless in the two meetings. In the second meeting, freshman attacker Vanda Baksa took sole possession of the single-season freshman goal record with an early hat trick against Cal.
With a win, the Sun Devils would go on to face 1 seed USC on Saturday, April 23 at 2:30 pm in the semifinal round. A loss would give the Sun Devils a day of rest and have them in the fifth place game on Sunday, April 22 at 11:00 am.
