NEW ORLEANS - Arizona State's very own Jorinde van Klinken and Turner Washington are currently on the watch list for The Bowerman for the indoor track and field season. The Bowerman is the highest honor a track and field athlete can receive from the NCAA. Washington was a finalist for the award last year, while van Klinken was a semifinalist. Washington is third in the shot put, and van Klinken comes in at second. Since 2010, Arizona State has had four finalists for the Bowerman trophy: Ryan Whiting in 2010, Maggie Ewen in 2017 and 2018, and Washington in 2021.
Van Klinken is currently ranked second in the NCAA and is set to compete at the NCAA Indoor National Championships next week. Her season's best mark is 18.88m/61-11.5 feet which is the second furthest mark in ASU indoor history. Washington's 21.33m/69-11.75 mark is 7.25 inches away from the national lead. He claimed the NCAA indoor shot record last indoor season and went on two claim the national titles in the indoor & outdoor shot along with the discus. Washington has won the last 13 shot put events he's competed in, and he's hit at least 20-meters in each of those outings too.
Van Klinken came to Arizona State during the winter of 2020 after completing her undergrad back home in the Netherlands. She's a two-time international gold medalist in the shot put, winning the shot put title in both the U23 European Throw Cup and the European U20 Championships in 2019. Van Klinken has represented the Netherlands, her home country, in seven tournaments since 2016 and has finished in the top three five times. She capped off her first year as a Sun Devil by throwing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
In her rookie indoor season with the Sun Devils, van Klinken earned first-team All-America honors after finishing third in the shot put at the NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships (17.56m/57' 7.5"). She also finished in the top two of every event she competed in.
In van Klinkens indoor season this year, she has won gold at two of the three regular-season indoor shot meets she's competed in. Her 18.88m/61-11.5 throw back on January 29th at the New Mexico Team Open was a new PR by over three feet, and good enough for second place in the NCAA which qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Although the Pac-12 does not have an official indoor track and field championship, van Klinken's 17.91m/58-9.25 throw at the Pac-12 Invitational on February 25th and 26th, won the conference meet.
Washington's 2021 accomplishments and accolades run over a page long. He's just the third man to ever claim NCAA gold in the indoor shot, outdoor shot and discus; he opened 2021 by breaking the NCAA indoor shot put record with a 21.85m/71-8.25 heave; and he holds the ASU records for the indoor shot and discus (66.26m/217-4). From the USTFCCCA he earned Outdoor West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year and Indoor Male Field Athlete of the Year; and he capped the 2021 season off with a 17th place finish at the USATF Track and Field Olympic Trials. Academically, Washington collected Men's Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, and he was a CoSIDA Academic All-American who went on to win CoSIDA XCTF Academic All-American Team Member of the Year.
