CHAPEL HILL, NC – Sun Devil Men's Tennis lost both of their matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Saturday and Sunday against No. 5 Ohio State and NorthWestern. ASU looks to get back on a winning streak when they take on San Diego on Sunday back at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
How it happened:
The Sun Devils started off their weekend Saturday against No. 5 Ohio State where they lost 4-0. In the doubles competition, only Max McKennon & Nicola Cigna were able to defeat OSU with a final score of 4-3. ASU was not able to beat Ohio State's No. 1 and No. 2 ranked duos. In the singles competition, Nicola Cigna, George Stoupe and Moritz Hoffman were unable to finish their matches due to the three-straight victories by the Buckeyes on their first three courts.
On Sunday, when the Sun Devils faced NorthWestern, their doubles duos Jacob Bullard/Murphy Cassone and George Stoupe/Mortiz Hoffman, were able to defeat NU with final scores of 7-6 (7-4) and 7-5. In the singles competition, Nicola Cigna and George Stoupe were able to defeat the Wildcats with final scores of 6-2, 6-2, and 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).
Although ASU did lose both of their matches at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, the Sun Devils were able to put some points back up on the board Sunday against NorthWestern losing 4-3, instead of getting shut out for a second time.
Up Next:
The Sun Devils will welcome San Diego to Tempe on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. after San Diego plays Arizona on Friday. ASU will then travel to Malibu, California to take on Pepperdine on Feb. 11.
