TEMPE - #ThrowsU is back on the international stage following Jorinde van Klinken's 18.88m/61-11.50 shot put mark. The throw puts her second in ASU history and ties her for third in the current international season. It also qualifies her for the World Athletics Championships and NCAA Outdoor Championships. Second-year sprinter Alonna Johnson moved to second all-time in the 600m (1:31.54), freshman Adriana Tatum (23.63) is sixth in the 200m, Grace Campbell (1.75m/5-9.00) is sixth in the high jump, and Justin Robinson (46.64) is 10th in the 400m. ASU brought home seven event victories on the day.
Van Klinken picked up this year right where she left off. The Dutchwoman's first season in Maroon and Gold saw her win the NCAA discus title, take bronze in the indoor shot, take the world lead in the discus (70.22m/230-4) and represent the Netherlands at Tokyo 2020. This was her first meet back competing for ASU since the Olympics. She's tied with Katharina Maisch of Germany for the third-furthest mark this season.
Tatum's 23.63 finish in the 200m came in just her second collegiate meet. The freshman now has the 36th-fastest indoor time in the NCAA thus far and leap-frogged over Porchea Carroll's 23.65 from 2005.
Johnson opened the season by running the third-fastest 600m time in program history, 1:33.45, but she clearly wasn't satisfied and shaved two seconds off that to swing into second all-time behind Melese Crozier (1:30.96, 2017).
Robinson ever so slightly edged out Herbt Polk's 46.65 from 2017 to take the 10-place position in the ASU annuls. If he can eventually get his time below 46.40, he'll be the first Sun Devil to do so since 2010.
Turner Washington did Turner Washington things today with a commanding victory in the men's shot. His 20.93m/68-8 was five and a half feet further than Nathaniel Miller's from CSU Pueblo and extends his meet-streak of hitting at least 68 feet to 11 contests.
ASU's distance runners were also in action today but competed in at the University of Washington. Jesper Wolski had the highest finish of the group, taking 19th in the 800.
ASU is right back in Albuquerque, New Mexico, next weekend for UNM's third meet of the year, the UNM Collegiate Classic.
