MANKATO, MN – For the second night in a row, the Arizona State men's ice hockey team scored first in the matchup against No. 1 Minnesota State. The game came down to the final minutes thanks to two goals within two minutes from rookie Josh Doan that brought the score within one. In a battle to the end, an MSU empty net goal sealed ASU's defeat, 3-5.
With two tonight, Doan leapt into the top-10 of all NCAA point scorers, tying at No. 9 with 31 on the season (11G, 20A).
Once again, the Sun Devils (15-14-0) came out of the gate swinging with the first goal of the game. Jack Becker scored his fourth power play goal of the season with mere seconds remaining in the first period. It was ASU's third man-advantage opportunity of the period and the team's 24th PPG of the year.
Things looked in ASU's favor after the opening frame as the Sun Devils boasted a 10-5-0 record when scoring first and a 7-5-0 record when leading after the first period before tonight.
Despite getting to the early lead, the Mavericks brought an offensive onslaught in the second period, outshooting ASU 23-6 in 20 minutes and scoring three unanswered goals. Ben Kraws made 32 saves before the third period commenced in his sixth consecutive start.
ASU controlled the first 10 minutes of the third period with two more power play opportunities, yet the Sun Devils couldn't capitalize on the chances. With seven minutes left in regulation, the game paused for a number of minutes after head coach Greg Powers challenged a two-minute minor penalty on a Mavericks skater, looking for a five-minute major. The officials reviewed the play for several minutes but ultimately found both penalties correct as originally called.
Josh Doan answered the call, scoring two goals - his 10th and 11th of the season - within two minutes with an extra attacker and empty net, bringing the Sun Devils within one with 72 seconds left in regulation.
With Ben Kraws still on the bench and replaced by an extra skater, the Mavericks scored an empty net goal to give ASU its second-straight loss.
UP NEXT: ASU returns to warmer weather and home ice against Alaska-Fairbanks on Feb. 4-5. The two-game series is the first of four-straight games against Fairbanks.
