AUSTIN, Texas – Anthony Valencia of Sun Devil Wrestling and Ilze Hattingh of Sun Devil Women's Tennis both earned CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large honors, with Valencia making it on the first team and Hattingh earning a third team nod.
Both Valencia and Hattingh had a 4.0 cumulative GPA after graduating with a bachelor's degree in business (communication) and parks and recreation management, respectively. Valencia also earned a master's in film and media studies. For both programs, they are the first CoSIDA Academic All-American since 2003. This is the second in wrestling's history and the third in program history for women's tennis.
Valencia adds this honor to a long list of accomplishments in his career. He is a two-time All-American and a four-time Pac-12 champion. He is the fourth ASU wrestler to win four Pac-12 titles. He is also the third in the record books in bout wins. Putting the student in student-athlete, he is a four-time Pac-12 academic honoree as well as a 2020 NWCA Scholar All-American.
Hattingh wrapped up her four seasons with a bang. She was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team and led the team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as well as making it to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship. She played all of her matches on the top court to lead the squad. She proved her strength in the classroom as well. She was named to the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete. Qualifying her for the academic All-American honor, she was named to the CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District.
