TEMPE, Ariz. – A tough shooting night nullified a solid defensive effort as the Sun Devil women's basketball team fell to Washington 50-35 on Friday.
Taya Hanson (11 points) and Katelyn Levings (eight points) led ASU on the offensive end as the two combined for more than half of ASU's points.
Hanson led ASU in rebounding with a career-high-tying seven boards. After recording a career-high five steals in Monday's win over Southern Utah, Hanson again led the team with three steals against the Huskies.
Despite shooting 21 percent, the Sun Devils (9-7, 4-7 Pac-12) were still within seven points after Bre'yanna Sanders' layup with just over five minutes remaining. Unfortunately, ASU was not able to come through with any of the comeback magic that has punctuated a number of its victories this season as it missed its last seven shots of the game.
The Huskies (5-10, 2-10) combined to put together a 13-point scoring advantage in the first and fourth quarters while the middle two quarters were played on nearly even terms with Washington edging ASU 27-25.
Down by six at the half, the Sun Devils quickly pulled within a single point after a 3-pointer by Hanson and a bucket by Levings cut Washington's advantage to 20-19 less than a minute into the third quarter.
A 6-0 run by the Huskies midway through the frame gave Washington its first double-digit lead, 34-23. Two free throws by Jaddan Simmons and a pair of free throws by Eboni Walker helped ASU cut the Huskies' lead to seven heading into the final quarter.
The Sun Devils were not able to take advantage of 26-16 advantage on the offensive glass as the Huskies ended the game plus-five in second chance points (14-9). Simmons (four offensive rebounds), Hanson (three offensive rebounds), Maggie Besselink (three offensive rebounds) and Walker (three offensive rebounds) combined for half of ASU's offensive rebounds.
Simmons and Besselink tied for the team lead in assists with three apiece while Hanson accounted for all three of ASU's triples on Friday.
