NICEVILLE, Florida - No. 3 Arizona State (3-1) closed out the Journeymen Collegiate National Duals with a 29-10 loss to No. 2 Penn State (8-0) Tuesday night at Raider Arena. No. 3 125 Brandon Courtney, #3 157 Jacori Teemer and #6 165 Anthony Valencia picked up points for the Sun Devils, with Courtney kicking off the day with a 18-7 major before Teemer's 8-3 win and Valencia's 10-5 victory. ASU's next match is a January 3 neutral site contest against No. 3 Michigan in the JW Marriott in Austin, Texas. The match will stream live via FloWrestling. ASU is back home January 9 at 7 p.m. to host Iowa State.
The day opened with another electric performance from Courtney. He led 10-5 after the first period thanks to five two-point takedowns - all of Jakob Campbell's points came from escapes. The middle period cooled and saw Courtney add four points on a reversal and takedown, and the final frame featured the Sun Devil earning a penalty point, a takedown, and his riding time bonus.
Teemer took a bit going. The score was just 4-3 after two periods, but Teemer kept his opponent at bay enough to add an escape, takedown and riding bonus to secure the second win of the day.
Valencia's went much of the same way, with the veteran eight of his points thanks to a pair of takedowns and a four-point nearfall across the first two periods. A final takedown in the third sealed it, and Valencia gave up just one takedown and three escapes.
