OMAHA, Neb. – The Sun Devil women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped following a 69-62 loss at Creighton on Sunday. Mael Gilles scored a career-high 18 points, while Jade Loville (15 points) and Jaddan Simmons (14 points) combined for 29 points.
The Sun Devils (5-5) shot 47 percent for the game, their third straight contest shooting 45 percent or higher.
The quartet of Gilles (8-13 FGs), Loville (7-13 FGs), Simmons (5-10 FGs) and Jayde Van Hyfte (4-6 FGs) combined to knock down 57 percent (24-42) of their shots.
ASU finished plus-two on the boards with guard Gabriela Bosquez leading the way with five rebounds.
Creighton (6-2) was aided by its efficiency from beyond the arc (7-15 3FGs/47.7) and at the free throw line (18-22 FTs/81.8) where it combined to score 39 of its points.
After a lackluster performance in the first half, the Sun Devils went to the locker room trailing 29-22.
ASU came out in the second half looking more like the team that averaged 79.5 points in its two wins last week. Five different players scored during a 13-3 run over the first six minutes of the second half to give the Sun Devils a 35-32 lead. Loville beat the third quarter buzzer with a basket put ASU up by five (46-41) entering the final quarter.
A layup by Simmons 13 seconds into the fourth quarter extended ASU's lead to 48-41. Unfortunately, that is as much distance as ASU was able to put between itself and Creighton.
"As soon as we did that, we came down and took quick shots," ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne said of why the momentum eventually swung back in Creighton's favor. "Let's keep doing what we're doing. We're moving the ball and attacking the rim, not coming down and settling for a shot because they were daring us to shoot early. We're going to keep getting better…. We didn't make the adjustments defensively that we talked about. We didn't do the things we knew we could do, offensively."
Facing its largest deficit of the game, the Bluejays countered with a 13-2 scoring run to take a 54-50 lead with 4:31 remaining.
In the game's final minutes, the Sun Devils were never able to make it a one passion game.
The 28 points the Bluejays scored in the fourth quarter were the most by a Sun Devil opponent this season.
The Sun Devils will play the second of consecutive road games on Saturday (1 pm PST/2 pm MST) when they play at San Diego.
