"It's a huge honor to be in this position as a finalist for The Bowerman," Washington said. "Going into last season I wasn't looking at taking into account reaching this point, but as everything came together my perspective changed. When I compete now I'm not just competing against other throwers, I'm competing against every track and field athlete in the country. From that perspective it's just more of a motivation to continuously excel at both the disc and shot put and bring it everytime I step in the circle. As far as next week I'm looking forward to the experience.  Being around that many track and field athletes - many of whom have gone on to win Olympic medals and world championships - helps bring the best out of anyone."

Washington is ASU's third-ever finalist for the award, following Ryan Whiting (2010) and Magdalyn Ewen (2017, 2018). He's coached by legendary throws coach Brian Blutreich who's twice won National Assistant Coach of the Year, brought 10 NCAA titles to Tempe since 2016, and coached his athletes to 23 NCAA titles in his 27-year career. The Barcelona '92 Olympian is a three-time All-American, two-time national champion, and holds three Pac-10 titles from his time at UCLA. Blutreich came after Whiting's ASU career, but he led Ewen to four NCAA titles and two national records.

???????????? ??????????????

Just three times in men's @NCAATrackField history has someone won the indoor shot, outdoor shot and discus titles all in the same season:

"The Bowerman is obviously an incredibly special experience," Blutreich said. "Only three people in all of track and field get to go, and for a thrower to get that recognition, which he's earned, is amazing. Having been there twice before with Maggie Ewen I know it's going to be a great experience for him with the red carpet treatment and being on TV and getting all the recognition that he's very-well deserved. He'll really enjoy it for sure and I think he'll see himself as one of the elite people at the NCAA level so I'm very happy for Turner."

Where to begin with Turner Washington. The Tucson native's 2021 accomplishments and accolades run over a page long. He's just the third man to ever claim NCAA gold in the indoor shot, outdoor shot and discus; he opened 2021 by breaking the NCAA indoor shot put record with a 21.85m/71-8.25 heave; and he holds the ASU records for the indoor shot and discus (66.26m/217-4). From the USTFCCCA he earned Outdoor West Region Male Field Athlete of the Year and Indoor Male Field Athlete of the Year; and he capped the 2021 season off with a 17th place finish at the USATF Track and Field Olympic Trials. Academically Washington collected Men's Indoor and Outdoor Scholar Athlete of the Year awards, and he was a CoSIDA Academic All-American who went on to win CoSIDA XCTF Academic All-American Team Member of the Year.

For some people, carrying on the family business means taking over a restaurant, or a local shop. For Anthony and Turner Washington (@Turner_DelOro) the business is discus throwing. And business is good!
