SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Sun Devils had a trio of top-16 finishes in both singles and doubles play at this week's ITA Southwest Regional Championship in San Diego.
Domenika Turkovic was terrific all weekend for the Sun Devils, earning a trip to the round of 16 in the singles bracket after winning her first three matches. Turkovic defeated USC's Grace Piper and UCSB's Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe and Shakhnoza Khatamova, the latter being the ITA's No. 51 ranked singles player.
She fell to Pepperdine's Nikki Redelijk, 6-3, 6-4, one round short of the quarterfinals, settling for a top-16 finish among 128 participants.
Turkovic paired stellar singles play with equally impressive work in the doubles bracket, as she and Marianna Argyrokastriti pieced together another top-16 finish. After a first-round bye, the duo earned a win over Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse and Santa Strombacha before falling in the third round.
Sedona Gallagher and Giulia Morlet were the authors of the Sun Devils' third top-16 finish of the week, as the doubles duo cruised to 6-2 and 7-5 wins in the first two rounds. They were bested by Pepperdine's Victoria Flores and Lisa Zaar, 6-3, in the third round.
Flores and Zaar are the country's No. 13 and No. 53 ranked singles players, respectively, per the ITA.
Of the 64 duos to compete in the doubles bracket, the final 16 featured two Sun Devil tandems.
Patricija Spaka and Cali Jankowksi, the third Sun Devil doubles group in San Diego this week, couldn't advance beyond the round of 32 after a win in the opening round.
Of the seven Sun Devils competing in the singles bracket, six advanced past the opening round.
Argyrokastriti and Spaka each added a pair of wins to reach the round of 32. Jankowski, Gallagher and Morlet won their opening rounds, but couldn't proceed any further.
Natasha Hill was defeated in the opening round of singles play, 6-0, 6-0, to Zaar.
The fifth tournament of the fall season, and the first in two weeks, wound up being the most successful, a testament to the kind of talent head coach Sheila McInerney will have at her disposal this season.
