TEMPE - It's been over 300 days since ASU women's tennis last suited up, but the off-season is finally over and the Sun Devils are set to return to the courts this weekend when they open the 2021 season with a pair of scrimmages against Arizona before starting the regular season Monday vs. Grand Canyon.
The 20th-ranked Sun Devils start the year with a home-and-home series with rival Arizona for the Sun Devil/Wildcat Scramble Friday and Saturday. The two day scrimmage starts in Tucson before moving to the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe on Saturday.
The 2020-21 regular season officially begins in Tempe on Jan. 18 when the Sun Devils host GCU, hoping to add another win to their perfect 13-0 series record against the Lopes. ASU holds a 4-1 record in season openers over the last five years.
ASU will then face No. 24 LSU and the winner of the No. 3 Texas/No.23 Baylor matchup in the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Austin, Texas Jan. 23-24. Following the kickoff, the Sun Devils will face off against talented out-of-conference opponents including Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
The full conference slate will be announced at a later date.
Led by head coach Sheila McInerney, ASU returns with two ranked players in No. 37 Ilze Hattingh and No. 115 Sammi Hampton. Hattingh also earned the No. 21 spot in doubles with her partner, Tereza Kolarova, and No. 50 with partner Lauryn John-Baptiste.
Hattingh and Hampton both put on an impressive run before the 2020 season was shortened, each securing nine singles wins. Hattingh and Kolarova were 8-1 and ranked at No. 46 before the end of the season. John-Baptiste and Hattingh went 15-4 together during the 2018-19 season.
