PAlO AlTO, Calif. – The No. 23 Sun Devil men's tennis team (13-5, 2-2 Pac-12) fell 4-2 in a Pac-12 matchup against Stanford (4-3, 1-0 Pac-12) on Friday afternoon. After battling neck-and-neck all day against the Cardinal, the Sun Devils were upset in the final match.
The Sun Devils came out the gates hot with a win on No. 1 from Tim Ruehl/Nathan Ponwith to put ASU in an early 1-0 lead. Stanford clapped back at ASU's fiery start and secured wins on No.2 and 3, winning doubles and giving the Cardinal early momentum into singles 1-0.
The Sun Devils took the first singles win from court 3 thanks to Ruehl, and shortly after Nathan Ponwith at No. 1 won 6-4, 6-2 to put ASU ahead 2-1. Stanford's Timothy Sah answered back, defeating George Stoupe at No. 5 to tie the match. Andrea Bolla clinched a point for ASU to gain the lead but shortly after on court 6 Stanford put up a point to even the match again at 3-3. A battle back and forth on court two was the deciding factor. All tied up at 3-3, ASU's Makey Rakotomalala fell in three sets to close out the day in Stanford's favor.
