TEMPE, Ariz. – Sun Devil Lacrosse fought hard against No. 13 Stanford before falling in overtime, 22-21, in an epic matchup on Friday afternoon.
In their first home matchup against a Top-15 team, Arizona State (7-4, 4-3) proved they belonged going toe-to-toe with the best in the conference. The Sun Devils had a six goal lead in the second half and had the undefeated Cardinal on the ropes, but were unable to earn their first win over Stanford in program history.
An incredible offensive effort was spearheaded by the Sun Devils three-headed attack of Carley Adams, Kerri Clayton, and Emily Glagolev. The group combined for 20 points, leading the Sun Devils to 20+ goals for the fifth time this season. It is only the third time in the last decade that Stanford allowed 20 or more goals.
The Sun Devils started out strong, jumping out to an early lead which they maintained a majority of the day. Arizona State was in front 7-2 in the first half and entered the break with a 12-10 halftime lead. The advantage grew to as much as six in the second half, with ASU controlling the action.
A late Stanford run overpowered the Sun Devils and forced overtime. With the sudden death-style setup, a single goal would determine the victor. The first three minutes of the initial overtime offered plenty of drama and intensity, but neither team was able to score. After the team's switch sides, a crucial Cardinal draw control gave them the first possession. They took advantage of the opportunity, cashing in on a free-position to remain undefeated.
TURNING POINT
A 7-0 run from the 22:31 to the 15:12 mark of the second half by Stanford proved the be the difference. With the Sun Devils taking their largest lead of the game at 16-10, the Cardinal managed to regroup and piece together a run. They would take a 17-16 lead in the process, setting up for an incredible back-and-forth finish.
Arizona State tied it at 17 with Stanford going back in front only 15 seconds later. A pair of Carley Adams' goals put the Sun Devils back on top 19-18. The Cardinal answered with a 2-0 run of their own to take back the lead, 20-19. Carley Adams came through clutch once again, tying the score with her sixth goal of the game.
Katie Brodsky forced her way to the net and willed a ball into the net to give the Sun Devils a 21-20 lead. Stanford had one last answer, tying the game with 1:51 left to set up a dramatic overtime period.
In the overtime period, both teams traded empty possessions. Eventually the Cardinal earned a free-position attempt, with Jacie Lemos lining up against Berkeley Bonneau. Stanford scored the sudden death goal to secure the victory in this memorable matchup.

- Carley Adams scored six goals, the seventh time she has scored 4+ goals in 11 games this season.
- She now has 41 goals, becoming only the second Sun Devil to reach that plateau (Kerri Clayton, 2018 – 44 goals).
- Adams and teammate Emily Glagolev both reached the 50-point mark, with Glagolev doing it for the second time in her career.
- Emily Glagolev finished with six points (three goals and three assists), her 12th 6+ point effort of her career
- It was her 14th career 3+ assist performance and seventh with at least three goals and three assists.
- She now sits at 99 career assists heading into Sunday's game.
- Kerri Clayton put together another vintage performance, causing opposing defense issues all game. She scored five goals and dished out two assists.
- She scored at least five goals and seven points for the 10th time in her career.
- Only the third time since 2009 that Stanford had allowed 20 goals. (3/1/20 at #6 Northwestern; 3/8/19 vs. #23 Colorado).
- Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau finished with a game-high six ground balls.
- Katie Brodsky put together her sixth multi-goal game of the season and 10th of her career.
- Brodsky added three assists, allowing her to match her career high with five points.
- Six Stanford goals came via free-position and five came on the man-advantage, as Berkeley Bonneau was fantastic when playing behind a set and even-strength defense.
- Arizona State held Stanford scoreless for a 10-minute stretch of the first half, going on a 6-0 run in the process to build a 7-2 lead. ASU had another 10-minute shutout streak to end the first and start the second half, this time allowing them to establish a six-goal lead.
- The Maroon & Gold finished with more ground balls (28-24) the Colorado and caused nine turnovers.
- In the first two meetings in Tempe under the previous coaching staff, Stanford outscored the Sun Devils 35-12. Arizona State went toe-to-toe with the Pac-12 perineal power, losing by one goal in overtime.
