STANFORD, Calif. – Sun Devil Lacrosse suffered a setback on the road in their Pac-12 opener against No. 19 Stanford at Stanford Stadium Friday evening.
It was fitting the contest took place on the Cardinal football field, as a physical affair developed between the two sides. Going toe-to-toe with Top-25 Stanford for the entire 60 minutes, the Sun Devils trimmed what was a six-goal lead to as little as three in the second half, but could not complete a valiant comeback effort. The 15-9 defeat (six goals) matched the smallest margin of defeat against a Top-25 opponent in program history.
Goalkeeper Berkeley Bonneau was up to her old tricks, keeping the Sun Devils in the game with several spectacular saves. She finished the evening with 13 saves, putting together yet another double-digit save effort. The Sun Devil defense showed flashes of brilliance, holding the Cardinal scoreless for multiple 5+-minute stretches throughout the game.
Arizona State's offense was led once again by Carley Adams, who has scored five or more goals in three of the first four games to start the 2021 season. Through four games, she is on an incredible pace with 19 goals, making a bid for another Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor with another fantastic performance.
TURNING POINT
Facing a two-goal halftime deficit, the opening minutes of the second half were crucial for the Sun Devils. Stanford would ride the strength of a 4-0 run to open of the final 30 minutes, taking a six-goal lead that they would never relinquish. Six of the next nine goals came from Arizona State, but the Maroon & Gold could not overcome the deficit.
A big reason why the game remained competitive was the play of Berkeley Bonneau, who did a little bit of everything tonight. She not only made 13 saves, but also collected three ground balls, forced a turnover, and at times was able to disrupt Stanford's offense with her aggressive style. However, six power-play goals from the Cardinals proved to be a big difference, with the Sun Devils playing nearly even at full strength.

"Berkeley was fantastic tonight," Coach McCormack remarked. "She came up big when we needed her and was our backbone. Overall the defensive unit had a solid effort and did a great job working together."
NOTABLES- The six-goal margin of defeat matches the smallest against a Top-25 team in program history and is the fewest goals that the Sun Devils have ever lost to the Cardinal by.
- Berkeley Bonneau turned in her second double-digit save performance of the season, the 28th of her illustrious career.
- Carley Adams scored five goals for the second consecutive, registering her 12th career multi-goal outing. After scoring 13 goals through the first 34 games of her career, Adams has now scored 37 goals in her last 12 games. She now has four 5+-goal efforts in her career.
- Emily Glagolev and Kerri Clayton each recorded two assists. For Glagolev, it is her 23rd career multi-assist game. Clayton finished with three points, the 22nd time in her career she had 3+ points in a game.
